The superconducting magnets used in high energy particle accelerators such as CERN’s LHC can be impacted by the circulating beam in case of specific failure cases. This leads to interaction of the beam particles with the magnet components, like the superconducting coils, directly or via secondary particle showers. [...]

Characterisation of the radiation hardness of cryogenic bypass diodes for the HL-LHC inner triplet quadrupole circuit
/ Wollmann, Daniel (CERN) ; Bernhard, Axel (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Cangialosi, Chiara (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; D'Angelo, Giorgio (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; Denz, Reiner (CERN) ; Favre, Mathieu (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN) ; Hagedorn, Dietrich (CERN) et al.
The powering layout of the new HL-LHC Nb$_3$Sn triplet circuits is the use of cryogenic bypass diodes, where the diodes are located inside an extension to the magnet cryostat, operated in superfluid helium and exposed to radiation. Therefore, the radiation hardness of different type of bypass diodes has been tested at low temperatures in CERN’s CHARM irradiation facility during the operational year 2018. [...]

For the high luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), it is planned to replace the existing triplet quadrupole magnets with Nb₃Sn quadrupole magnets, which provide a comparable integrated field gradient with a significantly increased aperture. These magnets will be powered through a novel superconducting link based on MgB₂ cables. [...]

The damage mechanisms and limits of superconducting accelerator magnets caused by the impact of high-intensity particle beams have been the subject of extensive studies at CERN in the recent years. Recently, an experiment with dedicated racetrack coils made of Nb-Ti and Nb$_3$Sn strands was performed in CERN’s HiRadMat facility. [...]

A transverse gradient undulator (TGU) is a key component compensating for the relatively large energy spread of Laser Wakefield Accelerator (LWFA)-generated electron beams for realizing a compact Free Electron Laser (FEL). A superconducting TGU with 40 periods has been fabricated at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). [...]

In a collaboration between CERN, BINP and KIT a prototype of a superconducting damping wiggler for the CLIC damping rings has been installed at the ANKA synchrotron light source. On the one hand, the foreseen experimental program aims at validating the technical design of the wiggler, particularly the conduction cooling concept applied in its cryostat design, in a long-term study. Bending Radius Limits of Different Coated REBCO Conductor Tapes - An Experimental Investigation with Regard to HTS Undulators

Compact FELs require short-period, high-field undulators in combination with compact accelerator structures to produce coherent light up to X-rays. Likewise, for the production of low emittance positron beams for future lepton colliders, like CLIC or FCC-ee, high-field damping wigglers are required. [...]
