A study of light neutron-rich nuclei by two-body nuclear reactions
/ Naulin, F ; Bernas, M ; De Boer, J ; Détraz, C ; Guillemaud, D ; Langevin, M ; Pougheon, F ; Roussel, P ; Roy-Stephan, M
/sup 14/C or /sup 18/O-induced two-body nuclear reactions are used to measure the mass excess and in some cases the excited state energies of /sup 14/B, /sup 18/C, /sup 18/N and /sup 19/N. Upper limits only are obtained for the cross sections of the (/sup 14/C, /sup 14/Be) and (/sup 18/O, /sup 22/O) reactions. [...]

Preliminary results of the search for exotic nuclei in the $^{18}O+ ^{18}O$ reaction mass of $^{19}$N
/ Détraz, C (Lyon, IPN) ; Naulin, F (Lyon, IPN) ; Langevin, M (Lyon, IPN) ; Roussel, P (Lyon, IPN) ; Bernas, M (Lyon, IPN) ; Pougheon, F (Lyon, IPN) ; Vernotte, J (Lyon, IPN)
A system has been built to identify low-cross section products of nuclear reactions and to accurately measure their energy. It includes a magnetic spectrometer and a detecting system in its focal plane consisting of two resistive-wire proportional counters and a set of four position-sensitive 5 cm-wide detectors. [...]

Neutron rich nuclei studied with the (/sup 14/C, /sup 16/O) reaction
/ Bernas, M ; De Boer, J ; Dessagne, P ; Langevin, M ; Pougheon, F ; Roussel, P ; Zaidins, C
Measurements of the masses and excited state energies of neutron rich nuclei /sup 62/Fe, /sup 68/Ni, /sup 74/Zn and /sup 80/Ge have been performed with the (/sup 14/C, /sup 16/O) reaction. The masses are compared with the Myers and Garvey-Felson predicted values. [...]

Use of the $^{18}O(^{18}O,^{14}O)^{22}O$ reaction to measure the mass of $^{22}O$
/ Hickey, G T (Australian Natl. U., Canberra) ; Weisser, D C (Australian Natl. U., Canberra) ; Cerny, J (Australian Natl. U., Canberra) ; Crawley, G M (Australian Natl. U., Canberra) ; Zeller, A F (Australian Natl. U., Canberra) ; Ophel, T R (Australian Natl. U., Canberra) ; Hebbard, D F (Australian Natl. U., Canberra)
Counter-telescopes and recoil-coincidence techniques were used to observe the /sup 18/O(/sup 18/O,/sup 14/O)/sup 22/O reaction at 100 Me V. These data establish a mass excess for /sup 22/O of 9.48+or-0.10 Me V, which differs by approximately 2.0 MeV from the previous value, but is in excellent agreement with several theoretical predictions. Final resolution of the element 104 question
/ Ghiorso, A (Lawrence Berkeley Lab, Univ of California, Berkeley, CA, USA)
A history of the long controversy between Dubna and Berkeley concerning the discovery of the element 104 is given. In particular, the author reviews the difficulties associated with the use of spontaneous fission in detecting new elements and contrasts this method with the use of alpha particle activities to define the atomic number. Pionic probes for exotic nuclei
/ Seth, K K (Northwestern Univ, Evanston, IL, USA)
These new tools are reactions involving pions in the incident and/or outgoing channels can be used in the study of exotic nuclei far from the valley of stability. The most useful of these reactions are the pion double charge exchange reactions, both ( pi /sup +/, pi /sup -/) and ( pi /sup -/, pi /sup +/). [...]
