/ Serini, D (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; De La Torre Luque, P (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Di Venere, L (INFN, Bari) ; Fusco, P (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Gargano, F (INFN, Bari) ; Giordano, F (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Loparco, F (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Loporchio, S (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Mazziotta, M N (INFN, Bari)
The next generation of satellite experiments for the studies of cosmic radiation will be equipped with plastic scintillators read-out by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), to be used as anti-coincidence detectors for gamma rays or for the identification of charged nuclei. For these applications, a high detection efficiency is required in order to ensure a high background rejection for the gamma-ray identification. [...]

Cosmic-ray interactions with the Sun using the FLUKA code
/ Mazziotta, M.N. (INFN, Bari) ; De La Torre Luque, P. (INFN, Bari ; U. Bari (main)) ; Di Venere, L. (INFN, Bari) ; Fassò, A. (PSI, SLS) ; Ferrari, A. (CERN) ; Loparco, F. (INFN, Bari ; U. Bari (main)) ; Sala, P.R. (INFN, Milan) ; Serini, D. (INFN, Bari ; U. Bari (main))
The interactions of cosmic rays with the solar atmosphere produce secondary particle which can reach the Earth. In this work we present a comprehensive calculation of the yields of secondary particles as gamma-rays, electrons, positrons, neutrons and neutrinos performed with the FLUKA code. [...]

Shashlik calorimeters for the ENUBET tagged neutrino beam
/ Ballerini, G (Insubria U., Como ; INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; Berra, A (Insubria U., Como ; INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; Boanta, R (INFN, Milan Bicocca ; Milan Bicocca U.) ; Bonesini, M (INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; Brizzolari, C (Insubria U., Como ; INFN, Milan Bicocca) ; Brunetti, G (INFN, Padua) ; Calviani, M (CERN) ; Carturan, S (INFN, Legnaro) ; Catanesi, M G (INFN, Bari) ; Cecchini, S (INFN, Bologna) et al.
Shashlik calorimeters equipped with a compact readout based on Silicon PhotoMultipliers can be longitudinally segmented by directly coupling the WLS fibers with the photosensors thus embedding the readout in the bulk of the calorimeter. Results on energy resolution and particle identification for such calorimeters are presented. [...]

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite has been successfully launched on the 17th December 2015. It is a powerful space detector designed for the identification of possible Dark Matter signatures thanks to its capability to detect electrons and photons with an unprecedented energy resolution in an energy range going from few GeV up to 10 TeV. The dual-readout calorimetric technique reconstructs the event-by-event electromagnetic fraction of the hadronic shower through the simultaneous measurement of scintillating (S) and Cherenkov (C) light produced by the shower development. The new generation of prototypes, based on Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) readout, adds unprecedented granularity to the well-known high-energy resolution. [...]

Application of SiPM arrays for the readout of a scintillator based time-of-flight detector

A feasibility study of replacing a conventional phototube with an array of SiPMs is presented. High gain, low voltage operation and insensitivity to the magnetic field make SiPMs practically useful for the light collection in a physics experiment. [...]

In this study an array of eight 6 mm x 6 mm area SiPMs was coupled to the end of a long plastic scintillator counter which was exposed to a 2.5 GeV/c muon beam at the CERN PS. Timing characteristics of bars with dimensions 150 cm x 6 cm x 1 cm and 120 cm x 11 cm x 2.5 cm have been studied. [...]

We have built a number of test arrays made of 16 SiPMs of 3 × 3 mm$^2$ with a mixed series–parallel configuration and common bias and readout. With this technique it is possible to increase the total active area keeping low the bias voltage and readout channels. [...]
