Simulation Study of Electron Beam Acceleration with Non-Gaussian Transverse Profiles for AWAKE Run 2 / Liang, Linbo (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Farmer, John P (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Xia, Guoxing (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Manchester U.)
In the physics plan for AWAKE Run 2, two known effects, beam loading the longitudinal wakefield and beam matching to the pure plasma ion channel, will be implemented for the better control of electron acceleration. It is founded in our study of beam matching that the transverse profile of the initial witness beam have a significant impact on its acceleration quality. [...]

Electron Witness Constraints for AWAKE / Farmer, John P (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Liang, Linbo (Manchester U.) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Weidl, Martin (Garching, Max Planck Inst.)
The AWAKE project at CERN successfully demonstrated the use of a proton driver to accelerate an electron witness in plasma*. One of the key goals for AWAKE Run2 is to better control this acceleration, separating the proton-beam-modulation and electron-acceleration stages in order to achieve high energy electrons with high beam quality. Design of the Proton and Electron Transfer Lines for AWAKE Run 2c / Ramjiawan, Rebecca (JAI, UK ; CERN) ; Döbert, Steffen (CERN) ; Farmer, John (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Verra, Livio (CERN)
The AWAKE Run 1 experiment achieved electron acceleration to 2 GeV using plasma wakefield acceleration driven by 400 GeV, self-modulated proton bunches from the CERN SPS. The Run 2c phase of the experiment aims to build on these results by demonstrating acceleration to ~10 GeV while preserving the quality of the accelerated electron beam. [...]

Analytical and Numerical Characterization of Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation as a Longitudinal Electron Bunch Profile Monitor for AWAKE Run 2 / Davut, Can (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Apsimon, Oznur (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Karataev, Pavel (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Xia, Guoxing (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
In this paper, CST simulations of the coherent Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation with a range of parameters for different dielectric target materials and geometries are discussed and compared with the theoretical investigation of the Polarization Current Approach to design a prototype of a radiator for the bunch length/profile monitor for AWAKE Run 2. It was found that the result of PCA theory and CST simulation are consistent with each other regarding the shape of the emitted ChDR cone..

Manchester (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
AWAKE is a proton driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment at CERN which uses the protons from the SPS. It aims to study the self modulation instability of a proton bunch and the acceleration of an externally injected electron beam in the plasma wakefields, during the so called Phase II until the technical stop of LHC and its injector chain (LS2) in 2019. Optimization Study of Beam Position and Angular Jitter Independent Bunch Length Monitor for Awake Run 2 / Davut, Can (U. Manchester (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. In this paper, a study using the Polarization Current Approach (PCA) model is performed to optimize the design of a short bunch length monitor using two dielectric radiators that produce coherent Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR). The electromagnetic power emitted from each radiator is measuring a different part of the bunch spectrum using Schottky diodes. [...]
