The use of nuclear emulsions in very large physics experiments is now possible thanks to the recent improvements in the industrial production of emulsions and to the development of fast automated microscopes. In this paper the hardware performances of the European Scanning System (ESS) are described. [...]

Track reconstruction in the emulsion-lead target of the OPERA experiment using the ESS microscope / Arrabito, L. (Lyon, IPN) ; Bozza, C. (INFN, Salerno ; Salerno U.) ; Buontempo, S. (INFN, Naples ; Naples U.) ; Consiglio, L. (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; Cozzi, M. (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; D'Ambrosio, N. (Gran Sasso) ; Lellis, G.De (INFN, Naples ; Naples U.) ; Serio, M.De (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Capua, F.Di (INFN, Naples ; Naples U.) ; Ferdinando, D.Di (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) et al.
The OPERA experiment, designed to conclusively prove the existence of $\rm \nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau$ oscillations in the atmospheric sector, makes use of a massive lead-nuclear emulsion target to observe the appearance of $\rm \nu_\tau$'s in the CNGS $\rm \nu_\mu$ beam. The location and analysis of the neutrino interactions in quasi real-time required the development of fast computer-controlled microscopes able to reconstruct particle tracks with sub-micron precision and high efficiency at a speed of 20 cm^2 / h. Electron/pion separation with an Emulsion Cloud Chamber by using a Neural Network / Arrabito, L. (Lyon, IPN) ; Autiero, D. (Lyon, IPN) ; Bozza, C. (INFN, Salerno ; Salerno U.) ; Buontempo, S. (INFN, Naples ; Naples U.) ; Caffari, Y. (Lyon, IPN) ; Consiglio, L. (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; Cozzi, M. (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; D'Ambrosio, N. (Gran Sasso) ; Lellis, G.De (INFN, Naples ; Naples U.) ; Serio, M.De (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) et al.
We have studied the performance of a new algorithm for electron/pion separation in an Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC) made of lead and nuclear emulsion films. The software for separation consists of two parts: a shower reconstruction algorithm and a Neural Network that assigns to each reconstructed shower the probability to be an electron or a pion. [...]

Search for $\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_{\tau}$ oscillation with the OPERA experiment in the CNGS beam / OPERA Collaboration
The OPERA neutrino experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the nu_mu to nu_tau channel, the nu_tau signature being the identification of the tau-lepton created in its charged current interaction. [...]

Measurement of the cosmic ray muon flux seasonal variation with the OPERA detector / OPERA Collaboration
The OPERA experiment discovered muon neutrino into tau neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, detecting tau leptons by means of nuclear emulsion films. The apparatus was also endowed with electronic detectors with tracking capability, such as scintillator strips and resistive plate chambers. [...]

Updated constraints on sterile neutrino mixing in the OPERA experiment using a new $\nu_e$ identification method / OPERA Collaboration
This paper describes a new $\nu_e$ identification method specifically designed to improve the low-energy ($< 30\,\mathrm{GeV}$) $\nu_e$ identification efficiency attained by enlarging the emulsion film scanning volume with the next generation emulsion readout system. A relative increase of 25-70% in the $\nu_e$ low-energy region is expected, leading to improvements in the OPERA sensitivity to neutrino oscillations in the framework of the 3 + 1 model. [...]

Latest results of the OPERA experiment on nu-tau appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam / OPERA Collaboration
OPERA is a long-baseline experiment designed to search for $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode. It was based at the INFN Gran Sasso laboratory (LNGS) and took data from 2008 to 2012 with the CNGS neutrino beam from CERN. [...]

Final results on neutrino oscillation parameters from the OPERA experiment in the CNGS beam / OPERA Collaboration
The OPERA experiment has conclusively observed the appearance of tau neutrinos in the muon neutrino CNGS beam. Exploiting the OPERA detector capabilities, it was possible to isolate high purity samples of $\nu_{e}$, $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current weak neutrino interactions, as well as neutral current weak interactions. OPERA tau neutrino charged current interactions / OPERA Collaboration
The OPERA experiment was designed to discover the v$_\tau$ appearance in a v$_\mu$ beam, due to neutrino oscillations. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consisted of a nuclear photographic emulsion/lead target with a mass of about 1.25 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. [...]
