Real-time cluster finding for LHCb silicon pixel VELO detector using FPGA

In the Run-3 of LHCb, the High Level Trigger will have to process events at full LHC collision rate (30 MHz). This is a very challenging goal, and delegating some low-level tasks to FPGA accelerators can be very helpful by saving precious computing time. [...]

Real-time reconstruction of long-lived particles at LHCb using FPGAs
/ Cenci, Riccardo (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore) ; Di Luca, Andrea (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.) ; Lazzari, Federico (INFN, Pisa ; Siena U.) ; Morello, Michael J. (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore) ; Punzi, Giovanni (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.)
/LHCb Collaboration
Finding tracks downstream of the magnet at the earliest LHCb trigger level is not part of the baseline plan of the upgrade trigger, on account of the significant CPU time required to execute the search. Many long-lived particles, such as $K^0_S$ and strange baryons, decay after the vertex track detector, so that their reconstruction efficiency is limited. [...]

We present the results of an R&D; study for a specialized processor capable of precisely reconstructing events with hundreds of charged-particle tracks in pixel and silicon strip detectors at $40\,\rm MHz$, thus suitable for processing LHC events at the full crossing frequency. For this purpose we design and test a massively parallel pattern-recognition algorithm, inspired to the current understanding of the mechanisms adopted by the primary visual cortex of mammals in the early stages of visual-information processing. A real-time FPGA-based cluster finding algorithm for LHCb silicon pixel detector
/ Bassi, Giovanni (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore) ; Giambastiani, Luca (Padua U.) ; Lazzari, Federico (INFN, Pisa ; INFN, Siena ; Siena U.) ; Morello, Michael J (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore) ; Pajero, Tommaso (Oxford U.) ; Punzi, Giovanni (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.)
Starting from the next LHC run, the upgraded LHCb High Level Trigger will process events at the full LHC collision rate (averaging 30 MHz). This challenging goal, tackled using a large and heterogeneous computing farm, can be eased addressing lowest-level, more repetitive tasks at the earliest stages of the data acquisition chain. [...]

The last Complex WIMPs standing

We continue the study of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) started in [arXiv:2107.09688], focusing on a single complex electroweak $n$-plet with non-zero hypercharge added to the Standard Model. The minimal splitting between the Dark Matter and its electroweak neutral partner required to circumvent direct detection constraints allows only multiplets with hypercharge smaller or equal to 1. / Cè, Marco (Helmholtz Inst., Mainz ; INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore) ; Giusti, Leonardo (CERN ; INFN, Milan Bicocca ; Milan Bicocca U.) ; Schaefer, Stefan (DESY, Zeuthen ; NIC, Zeuthen)
We discuss the recently proposed multiboson domain-decomposed factorization of the gauge-field dependence of the fermion determinant in lattice QCD. In particular, we focus on the case of a lattice divided in an arbitrary number of thick time slices. [...]

We present the results of a detailed simulation of the artificial retina pattern-recognition algorithm, designed to reconstruct events with hundreds of charged-particle tracks in pixel and silicon detectors at LHCb with LHC crossing frequency of 40MHz. The detailed geometry and charged-particle activity of a large tracking detector are simulated and used to assess the performance of the artificial retina algorithm. [...]
