A Highschooler’s Guide to GeV-Range Electromagnetism
/ Chatterji, Satchit (Unlisted, IN) ; Desai, Aayush (Unlisted, IN) ; Dwarkesh, Aditya (Unlisted, IN) ; Ganesh, Anushree (Unlisted, IN) ; Kunder, Ameya (Unlisted, IN) ; Malhotra, Pulkit (Unlisted, IN) ; Sahoo, Roshni (Unlisted, IN) ; Shah, Jinal (Unlisted, IN) ; Velmurugan, Kiranbhaskar (Unlisted, IN) ; Joos, Markus (CERN) et al.
The following article has been written primarily by the high school students who make up the team “Cryptic Ontics”, one of the two winning teams in the 2018 edition of CERN’s Beamline for Schools (BL4S) competition, and is based on the set of experiments the students endeavoured to conduct over the course of a two-week period at CERN. Reconstructing influential physical theories from scratch often helps in uncovering hitherto unknown logical connections and eliciting instructive empirical checkpoints within said theory. [...]

A low-cost Cherenkov detector to be tested in CERN's T9 beam line
/ Felici, Maria Rita (Unlisted, IT) ; Cameli, Luca (Unlisted, IT ; INFN, Rome) ; Camilli, Alessandro (Unlisted, IT) ; Castelli, Vanessa (Unlisted, IT) ; Catalini, Francesco (Unlisted, IT) ; Cipolletti, Samuele (Unlisted, IT) ; Crescenzi, Federico (Unlisted, IT) ; Decembrini, Niccolò (Unlisted, IT) ; De Paolis, Aurora (Unlisted, IT) ; Fattenotte, Francesco (Unlisted, IT) et al.
The TCO-Asa is a 2015 established team of high-school students of the Liceo Scientifico T. Calzecchi Onesti, in Fermo (Italy), who built a detector instrumented by consumer components including a CMOS camera and a silicon photomultiplier readout by the open-source ArduSiPM kit, to study the Cherenkov effect in water. This proceeding presents the main activities of the students that included the definition of the geometry of the detector, the realisation of the structure prepared by Scanny3D, the optimisation of the coupling between the water and the sensors, the experiences with 18F (prepared by Acom SRL) and 226Rd radioactive sources, and the results of the tests performed at the Beam Test Facility in INFN-Frascati in 2016.The team proposed to expose the detector to a test beam at CERN in 2016 and in 2017 within the Beamline for School initiative. Pyramids are the greatest architectural achievement of ancient civilization,
so people all over the world are curious as to the purpose of such huge
constructions. No other structure has been studied as thoroughly, nor have so
many books and articles been written about it. [...]

The European Union (EU) initiative on the Digital Transformation of Health and Care (Digicare) aims to provide the
conditions necessary for building a secure, flexible, and decentralized digital health infrastructure. Creating a European
Health Research and Innovation Cloud (HRIC) within this environment should enable data sharing and analysis for
health research across the EU, in compliance with data protection legislation while preserving the full trust of the
participants. [...]

An opportunity to have a substantial impact on multiple challenging societal problems exists in simultaneously addressing the following: (a) the urgent need for sustainable health care; (b) the importance of mentorship in enabling the emergence of new generations of leaders; (c) the essential need for cross-cultural competency1 to address global crises through problem solving across societal boundaries; and (d) options for continued productivity by the increasing number of older people. Sustainable health care needs to build on cancer care, which requires urgent intervention and encompasses noncommunicable and infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and geographically isolated populations in high-income countries (HICs). We report on the generation and tuning of single-frequency laser light in a monolithic Fabry–Pérot diamond Raman resonator operating in the visible spectral range. The device was capable of squeezing the linewidth of a broad multi-mode nanosecond pump laser ([Formula: see text] 7.2 ± 0.9 GHz at [Formula: see text] 450 nm) to a nearly Fourier-limited single axial mode Stokes pulse ([Formula: see text] 114 ± 20 MHz at [Formula: see text] 479 nm).
