Commissioning strategies of hollow electron lens residual kick compensation / Rakic, M (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bruce, R (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; Hermes, P (CERN) ; Kotzian, G (CERN) ; Redaelli, S (CERN) ; Soderen, M (CERN) ; Valuch, D (CERN)
Hollow electron lenses (HELs) could be used in the HL-LHC to selectively remove halo particles from the circulating beams. While the ideal design should leave particles in the beam core unaffected, in reality, the core particles will be exposed to a small residual kick that could induce transverse emittance blowup if not properly compensated while the HEL is operated in pulsed mode. HL-LHC Beam Dynamics with Hollow Electron Lenses / Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; De Maria, Riccardo (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Stancari, Giulio (Fermilab)
Each of the two proton beams in the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) will carry a total energy of 700 MJ. One concern for machine protection is the energy stored in the transverse beam halo, estimated to potentially reach up to 5% of the total stored energy. [...]

First Attempts at using Active Halo Control at the LHC / Wagner, Joschka (Frankfurt U. ; CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Garcia Morales, Hector (CERN) ; Höfle, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Kotzian, Gerd (CERN) ; Kwee-Hinzmann, Regina (CERN) ; Langner, Andy (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Quaranta, Elena (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) et al.
The beam halo population is a non-negligible factor for the performance of the LHC collimation system and the machine protection. In particular this could become crucial for aiming at stored beam energies of 700 MJ in the High Luminosity (HL-LHC) project, in order to avoid beam dumps caused by orbit jitter and to ensure safety during a crab cavity failure. Nonlinear dynamics of proton beams with hollow electron lens in the CERN high-luminosity LHC / Mirarchi, D (CERN ; U. Manchester (main)) ; Appleby, R B (U. Manchester (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Bruce, R (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; Mereghetti, A (CERN) ; Redaelli, S (CERN) ; Stancari, G (Fermilab)
The design stored beam energy in the CERN high-luminosity large hadron collider (HL-LHC) upgrade is about 700 MJ, with about 36 MJ in the beam tails, according to estimates based on scaling considerations from measurements at the LHC. Such a large amount of stored energy in the beam tails poses serious challenges on its control and safe disposal. In particular, orbit jitters can cause significant losses on primary collimators, which can lead to accidental beam dumps, magnet quenches, or even permanent damage to collimators and other accelerator elements. Reconstruction of Transverse Phase Space From Transverse Feedback Data for Real Time Extraction of Vital LHC Machine Parameters / Kotzian, Gerd (CERN) ; Soderen, Martin (CERN) ; Solvang, Preben (CERN) ; Stopjakova, Viera (Bratislava, Inst. Phys.) ; Valuch, Daniel (CERN)
The LHC transverse feedback system (ADT) provides bunch by bunch, turn by turn, normalized and digitized beam position signals from four pick-ups per plane and for each beam. Together with already existing powerful computer-based observation systems, this data can be used to reconstruct in real-time the transverse phase space coordinates of the centre-of-charges, for each individual bunch. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its High Luminosity (HL) upgrade foresee unprecedented stored beam energies of up to 700 MJ. The collimation system is responsible for cleaning the beam halo and is vital for successful machine operation. [...]

Hollow Electron Lenses (HELs) are crucial components of the CERN LHC High Luminosity Upgrade (HL-LHC), serving the purpose of actively controlling the population of the transverse beam halo to reduce particle losses on the collimation system. Symplectic particle tracking simulations are required to optimize the efficiency and study potentially undesired beam dynamics effects with the HELs. [...]
