First Interaction Region Local Coupling Corrections in the LHC Run 3 / Soubelet, Felix (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Apsimon, Oznur (Liverpool U.) ; Persson, Tobias (CERN) ; Tomás García, Rogelio (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U.)
The successful operation of large scale particle accelerators depends on the precise correction of unavoidable magnetic field or magnet alignment errors present in the machine. During the LHC Run 2, local linear coupling in the interaction regions (IR) was shown to have a significant impact on the beam size, making its proper handling a necessity for Run 3 and the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Supervised Machine Learning for Local Coupling Sources Detection in the LHC / Soubelet, Felix (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Apsimon, Oznur (U. Liverpool (main)) ; Persson, Tobias (CERN) ; Tomás García, Rogelio (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (U. Liverpool (main))
Local interaction region (IR) linear coupling in the LHC has been shown to have a negative impact on beam size and luminosity, making its accurate correction for Run 3 and beyond a necessity. In view of determining corrections, supervised machine learning has been applied to the detection of linear coupling sources, showing promising results in simulations. [...]

Prospect for Interaction Region Local Coupling Correction in the LHC Run 3 / Soubelet, Felix (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Apsimon, Oznur (Liverpool U.) ; Persson, Tobias (CERN) ; Tomás García, Rogelio (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U.)
Successful operation of large scale particle accelerators depends on the precise correction of unavoidable magnet field or alignment errors present in the machine. In the LHC Run 2, local linear coupling in the Interaction Regions (IR) has been proven to have a severe impact on beam size and hence the luminosity - up to a 50% decrease -, making its handling a target for Run 3 and High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). After more than 3 years of shutdown the LHC is again operational in 2022. Experience from the previous Long Shutdown (LS) has shown that the local errors in the triplet quadrupoles changed significantly between Run 1 and Run 2, and first measurements in 2022 unveil further changes. [...]

Recently, we conducted successful studies on the suitability of machine learning (ML) methods for optics measurements and corrections, incorporating novel ML-based methods for local optics corrections and reconstruction of optics functions. After performing extensive verifications on simulations and past measurement data, the newly developed techniques became operational in the LHC commissioning 2022. [...]

Optics Measurement by Excitation of Betatron Oscillations in the CERN PSB / Maclean, Ewen H (CERN) ; Antoniou, Fanouria (CERN) ; Asvesta, Foteini (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Dilly, Joschua W (CERN) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Garcia Morales, Hector (CERN) ; Hofer, Michael (CERN) ; Keintzel, Jacqueline (CERN) et al.
Optics measurement from analysis of turn-by-turn BPM data of betatron oscillations excited with a kicker magnet has been employed very successfully in many machines but faces particular challenges in the CERN PSB where BPM to BPM phase advances are sub-optimal for optics reconstruction. Experience using turn-by-turn oscillation data for linear optics measurements during PSB commissioning in2021 is presented, with implications for the prospect of such techniques in the PSB more generally..

Optics for Landau Damping with Minimized Octupolar Resonances in the LHC / Wenninger, J (CERN) ; Solfaroli, M (CERN) ; Nissinen, T (CERN) ; Hostettler, M (CERN) ; Horney, S (CERN) ; Chudoba, F (CERN) ; Tomás García, Rogelio (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix (CERN) ; Deniau, Laurent (CERN) ; Dilly, Joschua (CERN) et al.
Operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) requires strong octupolar magnetic fields to suppress coherent beam instabilities. The amplitude detuning that is generated by these octupolar magnetic fields brings the tune of individual particles close to harmful resonances, which are mostly driven by the octupolar fields themselves. Analytical and Numerical Characterization of Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation as a Longitudinal Electron Bunch Profile Monitor for AWAKE Run 2 / Davut, Can (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Apsimon, Oznur (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Karataev, Pavel (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Xia, Guoxing (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
In this paper, CST simulations of the coherent Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation with a range of parameters for different dielectric target materials and geometries are discussed and compared with the theoretical investigation of the Polarization Current Approach to design a prototype of a radiator for the bunch length/profile monitor for AWAKE Run 2. It was found that the result of PCA theory and CST simulation are consistent with each other regarding the shape of the emitted ChDR cone..
