The APW + lo (augmented plane waves + local orbitals) method of density functional theory, as implemented in the Wien2k code, is applied to calculate the electric field gradient of manganites. The versatility of perturbed angular correlations (PAC) in the study of nanostructures and thin films is demonstrated, namely for the specific cases of ZnO/Cd$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$O thin films and Ga$_2$O$_3$ powder pellets and nanowires, examples of transparent conductive oxides. PAC measurements as a function of annealing temperature were performed after implantation of $^{111m}$Cd$/^{111}$Cd (T$_{1/2}$=48$\,$min.) and later compared to density functional theory simulations. Radioactive 73As ions were implanted into a ZnO single crystal at room temperature with 60 keV up to a fluence of 2×1013 cm−2. Subsequently, the angular emission channeling patterns of emitted conversion electrons were recorded by means of a position-sensitive detector in the as-implanted state and following annealing up to 900 C, and were compared to simulated emission yields for a variety of different lattice sites. Lattice sites and collective ordering of oxygen atoms in HgBa$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{6+\delta}$ were studied using the perturbed angular correlation (PAC) technique at ISOLDE/CERN. The lattice location of ion implanted antimony in zinc oxide has been determined by means of $\beta^{-}$-emission channeling from the radioactive $^{124}$Sb isotope. Following 30 keV implantation of $^{124}$Sb into a single-crystalline ZnO sample to a fluence of $1 \times 10^{14}$ cm$^{−2}$, the angular-dependent emission rate of $\beta^{-}$−particles around several crystallographic directions was measured with a position-sensitive Si detector.
