Design of the optical system for the gamma factory proof of principle experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Martens, Aurélien (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Cassou, Kevin (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Chiche, Ronic (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Dupraz, Kevin (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Nutarelli, Daniele (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Peinaud, Yann (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Zomer, Fabian (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Dutheil, Yann (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Krasny, Mieczyslaw Witold (CERN) et al.
The Gamma Factory proof of principle experiment aims at colliding laser pulses with ultrarelativistic partially stripped ion beams at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Its goals include the first demonstration of fast cooling of ultrarelativistic ion beams and opening up many possibilities for new physics measurements in various domains from atomic physics to particle physics. Stable 500 kW average power of infrared light in a finesse 35 000 enhancement cavity / Lu, X -Y (IJCLab, Orsay ; Tsinghua U., Beijing, Dept. Eng. Phys.) ; Chiche, R (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Dupraz, K (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Johora, F (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Martens, A (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Nutarelli, D (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Peinaud, Y (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Soskov, V (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Stocchi, A (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Zomer, F (IJCLab, Orsay) et al.
Advances in laser technology over the past 25 years have been impressive, in particular, for the Ytterbium technology where, nowadays, kilowatt-class laser systems are available. This technology also led to the possibility to provide hundreds of kilowatts of laser power by the use of enhancement cavities. [...]

The Gamma Factory Project at CERN: a New Generation of Research Tools Made of Light / Gamma Factory Working Group Collaboration
The Gamma Factory project offers the possibility of creating novel re- search tools by producing relativistic beams of highly ionised atoms in CERN’s accelerator complex and exciting their atomic degrees of freedom by lasers to produce strongly collimated high-energy photon beams. Inten- sity of such beams would exceed by several orders of magnitude the ones offered by the presently operating light sources, in the particularly interest- ing energy domain from about 100 keV to above 400 MeV. Gamma Factory for CERN initiative - progress report / Dutheil, Yann (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Alden, Siobhan (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Alemany Fernandez, Reyes (CERN) ; Antsiferov, Pavel (Troitsk, IZMIRAN) ; Apyan, Armen (NAS Armenia, Yerevan) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bessonov, Evgeny (Lebedev Inst.) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Bieron, Jacek (Jagiellonian U.) et al.
The Gamma Factory (GF) initiative proposes to use partially stripped ion (PSI) beams as drivers of a new type of high-intensity and high-energy (0.1–400 MeV) photon source. As part of the ongoing Physics Beyond Collider studies, initial beam tests were carried out in 2017 and 2018 at the SPS and LHC with partially stripped xenon and lead beams [...]

Gamma Factory at CERN - novel research tools made of light / Placzek, W. (Jagiellonian U.) ; Abramov, A. (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Alden, S.E. We discuss the possibility of creating novel research tools by producing and storing highly relativistic beams of highly ionised atoms in the CERN accelerator complex, and by exciting their atomic degrees of freedom with lasers to produce high-energy photon beams. Intensity of such photon beams would be by several orders of magnitude higher than offered by the presently operating light sources, in the particularly interesting γ-ray energy domain of 0.1–400MeV. Laser beam transport and stabilization considerations for the Gamma Factory proof-of-principle experiment / Granados, Eduardo (CERN) ; Dutheil, Yann (CERN) ; Marsh, Bruce (CERN) ; Arduini, Gianluigi (CERN)
The Gamma Factory proof-of-principle (GF PoP) experiment consists in colliding high intensity ultrafast laser pulses with ultra-relativistic partially stripped ion beams at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The experiment represents the first demonstration of fast cooling of ultra- relativistic ion beams and high flux gamma ray production [...]

Chapter 4: High-gradient plasma and laser accelerators / Assmann, R (DESY ; LNF, Dafne Light) ; Gschwendtner, E (CERN) ; Cassou, K (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Corde, S (Ec. Novel high-gradient accelerators have demonstrated acceleration of electrons and positrons with electric field strengths of 1 to > 100 GeV/m. This is about 10 to 1000 times higher than achieved in RF-based accelerators, and as such they have the potential to overcome the limitations associated with RF cavities. [...]
