How to overcome the demagnetization of superconducting Halbach arrays? / Houbart, M (Liege U.) ; Fagnard, J-F (Liege U.) ; Dular, J (CERN) ; Dennis, A R (Cambridge U.) ; Namburi, D K (Glasgow U.) ; Durrell, J H (Cambridge U.) ; Geuzaine, C (Liege U.) ; Vanderheyden, B (Liege U.) ; Vanderbemden, P (Liege U.)
Assembling trapped-field superconducting magnets with mutually orthogonal magnetizations directions in a Halbach array configuration offers the prospect of generating both high fields and large field gradients. A major issue when assembling bulk superconductors in a Halbach array, however, consists in the alteration of the initial current density distribution during the assembly process. [...]

Enhancing the magnetic field gradient between two superconductors with rotational motion under a background DC field / Houbart, M (Liege U.) ; Fagnard, J-F (Liege U.) ; Harmeling, P (Liege U.) ; Dular, J (CERN) ; Dennis, A R (Cambridge U.) ; Namburi, D K (Glasgow U.) ; Durrell, J H (Cambridge U.) ; Geuzaine, C (Liege U.) ; Vanderheyden, B (Liege U.) ; Vanderbemden, P (Liege U.)
The ability of bulk high-temperature superconductors to trap magnetic flux densities up to one order of magnitude larger than the saturation magnetization of conventional ferromagnetic materials offers the prospect of generating large magnetic flux density gradients. Combining multiple superconductors, akin to assembling a Halbach array of permanent magnets, may increase the generated gradient even further. [...]

Power Eng., Warsaw)
Superconducting tape-based stacks used as trapped field magnets in electrical machines are subject to an AC-demagnetizing field. This study provides experimental measurements of the magnetization and demagnetization of several stack architectures for electrical machine applications. [...]

Application of Hot Press Bending for Shaping a Stack of HTS Tapes Operating as a Trapped Flux Magnet / Tomkow, Lukasz (Cambridge U. ; CERN) ; Smara, Anis (Cambridge U.) ; Glowacki, Bartek A (Cambridge U. ; Inst. Power Eng., Warsaw)
Trapped-flux magnets made of stacks of superconducting tapes are an interesting and important alternative to the application of rare-earth permanent magnets and trapping flux in bulk superconductors. Many applications, such as electric motors, can require the complex shapes of magnetic elements to combat issues such as demagnetization during the operation. [...]

Cross-field demagnetization of stacks of tapes: 3D modeling and measurements / Kapolka, Milan (Bratislava, Electrotech. Inst.) ; Pardo, Enric (Bratislava, Electrotech. (Cambridge U. ; Inst. Power Eng., Warsaw)
Stacks of superconducting tapes can trap much higher magnetic fields than conventional magnets. This makes them very promising for motors and generators. [...]

Finite Element Models for Magnetic Shields Made of Stacked Superconducting Tape Annuli / Dular, Julien (CERN) ; Brialmont, Sébastien (Liege U.) ; Vanderbemden, Philippe (Liege U.) ; Geuzaine, Christophe (Liege U.) ; Vanderheyden, Benoît (Liege U.)
Stacks of high-temperature superconducting tape annuli can be used as magnetic shields operating efficiently for both axial and transverse fields. However, due to their layered geometry and hybrid electrical and magnetic properties, implementing models of such structures is not straightforward. [...]

An experimental assessment of rotor superconducting stack demagnetization in a liquid nitrogen environment / Smara, Anis (Cambridge U.) ; Mineev, Nikolay (Cambridge U.) ; Climente-Alarcon, Vicente (Cambridge U.) ; Patel, Anup (Cambridge U.) ; Baskys, Algirdas (Cambridge U. ; CERN) ; Glowacki, Bartek A (Cambridge U. ; Inst. Power Eng., Warsaw) ; Reis, Thomas (Oswald Elektromotoren GmbH, Miltenberg)
Stacks of high-temperature superconducting tape have proved to trap in laboratory conditions levels of magnetic flux density one order of magnitude above actual state-of-the-art permanent magnets. Their simple manufacturing, high mechanical properties and intrinsic resistance to sudden quench greatly facilitate their utilization in industrial applications, amongst them, as a source of magnetic flux density in the rotor of electrical machines. Design considerations for electric motors using stacks of high temperature superconducting tape as permanent magnets / Climente-Alarcon, V (Cambridge U.) ; Patel, A (Cambridge U.) ; Baskys, A (Cambridge U. ; CERN) ; Glowacki, B A (Cambridge U.)
High temperature superconducting (HTS) tape can be cut and stacked to form composite bulks capable of generating fields as high as 17.7 T, the highest of any trapped field magnet. This makes them the most powerful permanent magnets accounting for the need to maintain a cryogenic temperature. [...]
