Conceptual Design of the LHC Beam Dumping Protection Elements TCDS and TCDQ
/ Goddard, B ; Riffaud, R ; Sans-Merce, M ; Weterings, W
The Beam Dumping System for the Large Hadron Collider, presently under construction at CERN, consists, per ring, of a set of horizontally deflecting extraction kicker magnets, vertically deflecting steel septa, dilution kickers and finally, a couple of hundred metres further downstream, an absorber block. A fixed diluter (TCDS) will protect the septa in the event of a beam dump that is not synchronised with the particle free gap or a spontaneous firing of the extraction kickers which will cause the beam to sweep over the septum. [...]

Upgrade of the LHC Beam Dumping Protection Elements
/ Weterings, W (CERN) ; Antonakakis, T (CERN) ; Balhan, B (CERN) ; Borburgh, J (CERN) ; Goddard, B (CERN) ; Maglioni, C (CERN) ; Versaci, R (CERN)
The Beam Dumping System for the Large Hadron Collider comprises for each ring a set of horizontally deflecting extraction kicker magnets, vertically deflecting steel septa, dilution kickers and finally, a couple of hundred meters further downstream, an absorber block. A mobile diluter (TCDQ) protects the superconducting quadrupole immediately downstream of the extraction as well as the arc at injection energy and the triplet aperture at top energy from bunches with small impact parameters, in case of a beam dump that is not synchronized with the particle free gap or a spontaneous firing of the extraction kickers. [...]

Protection of extraction septa during asynchronous beam dumps in HL-LHC operation
/ Farina, E (CERN) ; Atanasov, M (CERN) ; Borburgh, J (CERN) ; Bracco, C (CERN) ; Dutheil, Y (CERN) ; Lechner, A (CERN) ; Maestre, J (CERN) ; Muñoz, P Andreu (CERN) ; Nuiry, F X (CERN) ; Schwarz, P (CERN) et al.
The LHC beam dump system was developed to safely and reliably dispose of the LHC beams at the end of physics fills or in case of emergency aborts. The beams are extracted by means of kicker magnets, deflecting the beams horizontally, and septa, which provide a vertical kick. [...]

A Large Scintillating Screen for the LHC Dump Line
/ Lefèvre, T (CERN) ; Bal, C (CERN) ; Bravin, E (CERN) ; Burger, S (CERN) ; Goddard, B (CERN) ; Hutchins, S (CERN) ; Renaglia, T (CERN)
The 7 TeV proton beam from the LHC ring is ejected through a long transfer line to beam dump blocks, approximately 100m downstream of the ejection septa, a series of dilution kicker magnets provide a sweeping deflection spreading the extracted beam over a 40 cm diameter area on the face of the beam dump cores. During normal operation, the quality of each dump event must be recorded and verified. [...]

Performance of the TCDQ diluter system
/ Presland, A (CERNE) ; Goddard, B (CERN)
A single sided mobile graphite diluter block TCDQ, in combination with a two-sided secondary collimator TCS and an iron shield TCDQM, will be installed in front of the superconducting quadrupole Q4 magnets in IR6, in order to protect it and other downstream LHC machine elements from destruction in the event of a beam dump that is not synchronised with the abort gap. The TCDQ and associated elements should also intercept spurious particles in the beam abort gap to prevent quenches from occurring during regular beam aborts, and must also intercept the particles from the secondary halo during low beam lifetime without provoking quenches. The Performance of the New TCDQ System in the LHC Beam Dumping Region
/ Presland, Andrew ; Goddard, Brennan ; Weterings, Wim
The superconducting quadrupole magnet Q4 and other downstream LHC machine elements risk destruction in the event of a beam dump that is not synchronised with the abort gap. In order to protect these elements, a single sided mobile graphite diluter block TCDQ, in combination with a two-sided secondary collimator TCS and iron shield TCDQM, will be installed in front of Q4. Upgrade of the TCDQ Diluters for the LHC Beam Dump System
/ Atanasov, Miroslav G (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Boucly, Christophe (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Gentini, Luca (CERN) ; Moles, Benjamin (CERN) ; Weterings, Wim (CERN)
The TCDQ diluters are installed as part of the LHC beam dump system to protect the Q4 quadrupole and other downstream elements during a beam dump that is not synchronised with the abort gap, or in case of erratic firing of the extraction kickers. These diluter elements installed during Run 1 were compatible with beam up to 60 % of the nominal intensity, which was insufficient for the second run of the LHC. [...]

Kickers and dumps
/ Mertens, V (CERN)
Envisaged major interventions on the systems under the responsibility of TE-ABT include the completion of the staged dilution kicker system in LSS6, upgrade of the extraction protection elements TCDQ and possibly the replacement of a number of injection kickers. The reliability overhaul of the extraction and dilution kicker generators will be completed, and numerous improvements of electronics and controls components of the various systems be carried out, followed by a thorough test and re-qualification programme..
