HL-LHC series collimators: key technical requirements, crucial production challenges and risk mitigation plan
/ Piccinni, Carla (CERN) ; Perillo Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Senajova, Dominika (CERN) ; Baillard, Dylan (CERN) ; Grenier-Boley, Edouard (CERN) ; Nuiry, Francois-Xavier (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Seidenbinder, Regis (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
In view of High Luminosity (HL) - Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project, an upgraded collimation system has been developed to accommodate a rise of ten times of the integrated luminosity compared to the LHC. A new series of collimators will be produced and installed in the machine during the Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) to take place during 2026-2028. [...]

Collimation of 400 MJ Beams at the LHC: The First Step Towards the HL-LHC Era
/ Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Baillard, Dylan (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Giacomel, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to meet the challenges of the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. A first stage of the HL-LHC upgrade was already deployed during the last LHC Long Shutdown, offering important improvements of the collimation cleaning, a significant reduction of the impedance contribution and better cleaning of collisional debris, in particular for ion-ion collisions. (CERN) et al.
Flexible graphite (FG) with 1 - 1.2 g/cm$^3$ density is employed as beam energy absorber material in the CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam dumping system. However, the increase of energy deposited expected for new HL-LHC (High-Luminosity LHC) design demanded for an improvement in reliability and safety of beam dumping devices, and the need for a calibrated material model suitable for high-level FE simulations has been prioritized. The beam stored energy and the peak intensity of CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will grow in the next few years. The former will increase from the 320 MJ values of Run2 (2015-2018) to almost 540 MJ during Run3 (2022 onwards) and 680 MJ during the HL-LHC era putting stringent requirements on beam intercepting devices, such as absorbers and dumps. To provide HL-LHC performance, the CERN LHC injector chain underwent a major upgrade during an almost 2-year-long shutdown. In the first half of 2021 the injectors were gradually re-started with the aim to reach at least pre-shutdown parameters for LHC as well as for fixed target beams. [...]

In the framework of the CERN Large Hadron Collider Injectors Upgrade (LIU) Project, the Proton Synchrotron (PS) has been equipped with two new movable Internal Dumps (PSID), each of them capable of absorbing particle beams of an energy of up to 100 kJ. These dumps replace the old Internal Dumps, which have been operated in the accelerator complex since their installation in 1975 until their decommissioning and removal from the machine during the second LHC Long Shut down (LS2).
