FOCUS (Fast Monte CarlO approach to Coherence of Undulator Sources) is a new GPU-based simulation code to compute the transverse coherence of undulator radiation from ultra-relativistic electrons. The core structure of the code, which is written in the language C++ accelerated with CUDA, combines an analytical description of the emitted electric fields and massively parallel computations on GPUs. Two-Dimensional Beam Size Measurements with X-Ray Heterodyne Near Field Speckles
/ Siano, Mirko (Milan U.) ; Butti, Daniele (CERN) ; Goetz, Alexander (CERN) ; Iriso, Ubaldo (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Nosych, Andriy A (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Paroli, Bruno (Milan U.) ; Potenza, Marco A C (Milan U.) ; Solano, Eduardo (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) et al.
We report on 2D beam size measurements with a novel interferometric technique named Heterodyne Near Field Speckles, capable of resolving few-micrometer beam sizes. It relies on the interference between the weak spherical waves scattered by a colloidal suspension and the intense transilluminating X-ray beam. [...]

Two-dimensional electron beam size measurements with x-ray heterodyne near field speckles
/ Siano, M (Milan U. ; INFN, Milan) ; Paroli, B (Milan U. ; INFN, Milan) ; Potenza, M A C (Milan U. ; INFN, Milan) ; Teruzzi, L (Milan U. ; INFN, Milan) ; Iriso, U (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Nosych, A A (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Solano, E (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Torino, L (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Butti, D (CERN) ; Goetz, A (CERN) et al.
In this paper we report on recent two-dimensional (2D) electron beam size measurements with a nonconventional synchrotron radiation interferometric technique based on x-ray heterodyne near field speckles (HNFS). The method relies on Fourier analysis of the random speckle patterns generated by a water suspension of nanospheres to assess the full 2D transverse coherence of the incoming x rays. [...]

What you get? Transverse and Longitudinal Distributions
/ Roncarolo, F (CERN) ; Andreazza, W (CERN) ; Bart-Pedersen, S (CERN) ; Boccardi, A (CERN) ; Bravin, E (CERN) ; Dehning, B (CERN) ; Emery, J (CERN) ; Goldblatt, A (CERN) ; Gras, J-J (CERN) ; Guerrero, A (CERN) et al.
The transverse beam emittances of the LHC proton and ion beams can be inferred
by measuring the beam sizes with Wire Scanner (WS), Synchrotron Radiation (BSRT)
and Beam Gas Ionization (BGI) monitors. The Abort Gap Monitor (AGM) and the
Longitudinal Density Monitor (LDM) are used to characterize the longitudinal
distributions. [...]

"What You Get" - Orbit and tune measurements and feedback

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has now been operated successfully for 3 years relying on the good performance of its beam instrumentation, including position and tune monitors and their respective feedback systems. This contribution gives an overview of the performance and limitations of the current orbit and tune systems. [...]

After the 2011 run, actions were put in place during the 2011/2012 winter stop to limit beam induced radio frequency (RF) heating of LHC components. However, some components could not be changed during this short stop and continued to represent a limitation throughout 2012. [...]

Beam feasibility study of a collimator with in-jaw beam position monitors

At present, the beam-based alignment of the LHC collimators is performed by touching the beam halo with both jaws of each collimator. This method requires dedicated fills at low intensities that are done infrequently and makes this procedure time consuming. [...]
