Challenging neutron-capture cross-section measurements of small cross sections and samples with a very limited number of atoms require high-flux time-of-flight facilities. In turn, such facilities need innovative detection setups that are fast, have low sensitivity to neutrons, can quickly recover from the so-called $\gamma$-flash, and offer the highest possible detection sensitivity. A segmented total energy detector (sTED) for (n, γ) cross section measurements at n_TOF EAR2 / n_TOF Collaboration
The neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF is characterised by its high instantaneous neutron intensity, high-resolution and broad neutron energy spectra, specially conceived for neutron-induced reaction cross section measurements. Two Time-Of-Flight (TOF) experimental areas are available at the facility: experimental area 1 (EAR1), located at the end of the 185 m horizontal flight path from the spallation target, and experimental area 2 (EAR2), placed at 20 m from the target in the vertical direction. Channeling performance of bent crystals developed at CERN / Rodin, Volodymyr (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Demassieux, Quentin (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; Solis Paiva, Santiago (CERN) ; Seidenbinder, Regis (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Perillo Marcone, Antonio (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) et al.
Bent crystals are a mature technology used in several applications at CERN, such as the crystal-assisted collimation system for LHC ion operation and reduction of losses during the slow extraction from the SPS by shadowing the electrostatic septum. In the future, it is planned to measure electric and magnetic dipole moments of short-lived particles with a double-crystal experiment in the LHC. [...]

Real time crystal collimation monitoring at the CERN Large Hadron Collider / Ricci, Gianmarco (Rome U. ; CERN) ; Mostacci, Andrea (Rome U. ; CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Matheson, Eloise (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN ; INFN, Legnaro) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
At the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), bent crystals play a crucial role in efficiently redirecting ion-beam halo particles toward secondary collimators used for absorption. This innovative method leverages millimeter-sized crystals to achieve deflection equivalent to a magnetic field of hundreds of Tesla at LHC’s highest energies. [...]

In the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), bent crystals are used to efficiently deflect beam halo particles toward secondary collimators used as absorbers. In this crystal collimation scheme, a crystal with a length of a few millimeters can produce a deflection equivalent to a magnetic field of hundreds of Tesla at LHC top energies, improving the cleaning performance of the machine. Multi-section fission ionization chamber for measurement of 239Pu(n,γ) reaction in fission tagging method / Perkowski, J (Lodz U.) ; Alcayne, V (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Andrzejewski, J (Lodz U.) ; Cano-Ott, D (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Gawlik-Ramięga, A (Lodz U.) ; Mendoza, E (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Sánchez-Caballero, A (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Sibbens, G (Geel, JRC) ; Vanleeuw, D (Geel, JRC) ; Aberle, O (CERN) et al.
The 239Pu(n,γ) reaction cross section is very important for operation of both thermal and fast reactors, when loaded with MOX fuels. According to the NEA/OECD High Priority Request List the precision of cross section data for this reaction should be improved. [...]

Modelling and identification methods for simulation of cable-suspended dual-arm robotic systems / D'Ago, Giancarlo (CERN ; Naples U.) ; Selvaggio, Mario (Naples U.) ; Suarez, Alejandro (Seville U.) ; Gañán, Francisco Javier (Seville U.) ; Rosario Buonocore, Luca (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Lippiello, Vincenzo (Naples U.) ; Ollero, Anibal (Seville U.) ; Ruggiero, Fabio (Naples U.)
This paper proposes rigid-body modelling and identification procedures for long-reach dual-arm manipulators in a cable-suspended pendulum configuration. The proposed model relies on a virtually constrained open kinematic chain and lends itself to be simulated through the most commonly used robotic simulators without explicitly account for the cables constraints and flexibility. An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to meet the challenges of the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. A first stage of the HL-LHC upgrade was already deployed during the last LHC Long Shutdown, offering important improvements of the collimation cleaning, a significant reduction of the impedance contribution and better cleaning of collisional debris, in particular for ion-ion collisions. One of the critical aspects for the accurate determination of neutron capture cross sections when combining time-of-flight and total energy detector techniques is the characterization and control of systematic uncertainties associated to the measuring devices. In this work we explore the most conspicuous effects associated to harsh count rate conditions: dead-time and pile-up effects. [...]
