Strongly curved super-conducting magnets: beam optics modeling and field quality / Benedetto, E (Unlisted, CH) ; Barna, D (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; D’Addazio, M (Unlisted, IT) ; Maria, R De (CERN) ; Felcini, E (Unlisted, IT) ; Frisella, G (Unlisted, IT) ; Garolfi, L (Unlisted, CH ; CERN) ; Latina, A (CERN) ; Norman, H (Manchester U.) ; Oponowicz, E (CERN) et al.
Superconducting dipoles with a strong curvature (radius smaller than 2 meters, for an aperture of about 100 mm and a length of 1-3 meters) are required for applications where compactness is key, such as the synchrotron and gantry for Carbon-ion therapy developed within the European program HITRIplus.Such magnets challenge several assumptions in the field description and put to the test the range of validity of beam optics codes. In particular, the equivalence that holds for the straight magnets between the transverse multipoles description obtained from the Fourier analysis (used for magnet design and measurements) and the Taylor expansion of the vertical field component along the horizontal axis (used in beam optics) is not valid any longer. In the framework of the euroSIG project and within an international collaboration between CNAO, CERN, INFN, and MedAustron, the design of a novel gantry for hadron therapy based on superconducting magnets and a downstream scanning system has been undertaken. The choice of placing the scanning system downstream of the last superconducting dipole plays a crucial role in the overall layout of the gantry, having a direct impact on its radius, weight, and cost. A collaboration between CERN, CNAO, INFN, and MedAustron has been formed aiming at designing a light rotating gantry suitable for hadron therapy based on 430 MeV/n carbon ion beams. After a first design for a 3 T dipole field, as the backbone of the gantry magnetic system, now the collaboration is looking at an alternative design, for at least 4 T field with a faster ramp rate. The design of a particle therapy system that integrates an innovative beam delivery concept based on a static toroidal gantry and an imaging configuration suitable for beam and online range monitoring is proposed and discussed. Such approach would provide a compact and cost-effective layout, with a highly flexible and fast beam delivery, single particle counting capability for fast measurement of beam fluence and position and a precise real time verification of the compliance between the treatment delivery and its prescription.
