/ Harryman, Daniel (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Bergamaschi, Michele (CERN) ; Bobb, Lorraine (Garsington, Oxfordshire) ; Fedorov, Kirill (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Karataev, Pavel (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Kieffer, Robert (CERN) ; Łasocha, Kacper (CERN) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Potylitsyn, Alexander (Tomsk Polytechnic U.) et al.
Cherenkov-Diffraction Radiation (ChDR) appears when a charged particle moves in the vicinity of a dielectric medium with velocity higher than the phase velocity of light inside the medium. As the charged particle does not contact the medium, the emission of ChDR is a phenomenon that can be exploited for a range of non-invasive beam diagnostics. [...]

During the last three years, the emission of Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR), appearing when a relativistic charged particle moves in the vicinity of a dielectric medium, has been investigated with the aim of providing non-invasive beam diagnostics. ChDR has very interesting properties, with a large number of photons emitted in a narrow and well-defined solid angle, providing excellent conditions for detection with very little background. [...]

First Measurements of Cherenkov-Diffraction Radiation at Diamond Light Source
/ Harryman, Daniel (JAI, UK) ; Apollonio, Marco (Diamond Light Source) ; Bergamaschi, Michele (CERN) ; Bobb, Lorraine (Diamond Light Source) ; Karataev, Pavel (JAI, UK) ; Kieffer, Robert (CERN) ; Krupa, Michal (CERN) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Potylitsyn, Alexander (Tomsk Polytechnic U.)
Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR), appearing when a charged particle moves in the vicinity of a dielectric medium with speed faster than the speed of light inside the medium, is a phenomenon that can be exploited for a range of non-invasive beam diagnostics. By using dielectric radiators that emit photons when in proximity to charged particle beams, one can design devices to measure beam properties such as position, direction and size. [...]

Incoherent Cherenkov diffraction radiation was recently produced in the Cornell electron storage ring using counterpropagating beams (electrons and positrons) passing in the close vicinity of a dielectric made of fused silica. We present in this paper a collection of the experimental investigations that were performed on Cherenkov diffraction radiation in both the infrared and the visible range. [...]

Recent Results on Non-invasive Beam Size Measurement Methods Based on Polarization Currents
/ Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Aryshev, Alexander (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Bergamaschi, Michele (CERN) ; Billing, Michael (Cornell U.) ; Bleko, Vitol'd (Tomsk Polytechnic U.) ; Bobb, Lorraine (Diamond Light Source) ; Conway, Joseph (Cornell U.) ; Forster, Michael (Cornell U.) ; Fuentes, Yadira (Cornell U.) ; Jones, Owain Rhodri (CERN) et al.
We present recent results on non-invasive beam profile measurement techniques based on Diffraction Radiation (DR) and Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR). Both methods exploit the analysis of broadband electromagnetic radiation resulting from polarization currents produced in, or at the boundary of, a medium in close proximity of a charged particle beam. Direct Observation of Incoherent Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation in the Visible Range

We report on the observation of incoherent Cherenkov radiation emitted by a 5.3 GeV positron beam circulating in the Cornell electron-positron storage ring as the beam passes in the close vicinity of the surface of a fused silica radiator (i.e., at a distance larger than 0.8 mm). The shape of the radiator was designed in order to send the Cherenkov photons towards the detector, consisting of a compact optical system equipped with an intensified camera. [...]

Non-invasive Beam Diagnostics with Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation
/ Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Bartnik, Laurel (Cornell U.) ; Bergamaschi, Michele (CERN) ; Billing, Michael (Cornell U.) ; Bleko, Vitol'd (Tomsk Polytechnic U.) ; Bobb, Lorraine (Diamond Light Source) ; Padilla Fuentes, Yadira (Cornell U.) ; Conway, Joseph (Cornell U.) ; Forster, Michael (Cornell U.) ; Jones, Owain Rhodri (CERN) et al.
Based on recent measurements of incoherent Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation (ChDR) performed on the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present here a concept for the centering of charged particle beams when passing close to dielectric material. This would find applications as beam instrumentation in dielectric capillary tubes, typically used in novel accelerating technologies, as well as in collimators using bent crystals for high-energy, high-intensity hadron beams, such as the Large Hadron Collid-er or Future Circular Collider. Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation From Long Dielectric Material: An Intense Source of Photons in the NIR-THz Range

This paper presents the design on the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) of an experimental set-up to meas-ure incoherent Diffraction Cherenkov Radiation (DChR) produced in a 2 cm long SiO2 radiator by a 2.1 GeV elec-tron beam. The electron beam is circulating at a distance of few mm from the edge of the radiator and the DChR photon output power is expected to be significantly higher than the diffraction radiation power emitted from a metal-lic slit of similar aperture.
