Empty-bucket techniques for spill-quality improvement at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Arrutia Sota, Pablo A (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew A (CERN) ; Hagmann, Gregoire (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Papotti, Giulia (CERN) ; Spierer, Arthur (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco M (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip N (JAI, UK) ; Piandani, Roberto (San Luis Potosi U.)
Synchrotrons can provide long spills of particles by employing resonant extraction where the circulating beam is slowly ejected over thousands to millions of turns by exploiting the amplitude growth caused by a transverse resonance. In the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), this method is used to satisfy the experimental requests of the North Area. [...]

A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. [...]

Millisecond burst extractions from synchrotrons using RF phase displacement acceleration / Sota, Pablo A. Arrutia (CERN ; U. Oxford (main)) ; Burrows, Philip N. (U. Oxford (main)) ; Fraser, Matthew A. (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco M. (CERN)
FLASH radiation therapy calls for the delivery of fast bursted spills of particles with dose delivery times of the order of milliseconds. The requirements overlap with fundamental physics experimental requests that are being studied at CERN, albeit at very different energy scales. [...]

Beam Position Detection of a Short Electron Bunch in Presence of a Longer and More Intense Proton Bunch for the AWAKE Experiment / Senes, Eugenio (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip N (JAI, UK ; CERN) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Gilardi, Antonio (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Krupa, Michal (CERN) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Pakuza, Collette (CERN ; JAI, UK) ; Wendt, Manfred (CERN)
The AWAKE experiment studies the acceleration of electrons to multi-GeV levels driven by the plasma wakefield generated by an ultra-relativistic and high intensity proton bunch. The proton beam, being considerably more intense than the co-propagating electron bunch, perturbs the measurement of the electron beam position achieved via standard techniques. [...]

A new, low-energy beamline branch is currently under consideration for the H₂ beamline at the CERN North Area. This new branch would extend the capabilities of the current infrastructure enabling the study of particles in the very low, 1-13 GeV/c, momentum range. [...]

A High-Resolution, Low-Latency, Bunch-by-Bunch Feedback System for Nano-Beam Stabilization / Ramjiawan, Rebecca (JAI, UK) ; Bett, Douglas (JAI, UK) ; Blaskovic Kraljevic, Neven (ESS, Lund) ; Bromwich, Talitha (Edinburgh U.) ; Burrows, Philip N (JAI, UK) ; Christian, Glenn B (Diamond Light Source) ; Perry, Colin (JAI, UK)
A low-latency, bunch-by-bunch feedback system employing high-resolution cavity Beam Position Monitors (BPMs) has been developed and tested at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF2) at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), Japan. The feedback system was designed to demonstrate nanometer-level vertical stabilization at the focal point of the ATF2 and can be operated using either a single BPM to provide local beam stabilization, or by using two BPMs to stabilize the beam at an intermediate location.
