CERN Tape Archive: a distributed, reliable and scalable scheduling system / Cano, Eric (CERN) ; Bahyl, Vladimír (CERN) ; Caffy, Cédric (CERN) ; Cancio, Germán (CERN) ; Davis, Michael (CERN) ; Keeble, Oliver (CERN) ; Kotlyar, Viktor (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) ; Leduc, Julien (CERN) ; Murray, Steven (CERN)
The CERN Tape Archive (CTA) provides a tape backend to disk systems and, in conjunction with EOS, is managing the data of the LHC experiments at CERN.Magnetic tape storage offers the lowest cost per unit volume today, followed by hard disks and flash. In addition, current tape drives deliver a solid bandwidth (typically 360MB/s per device), but at the cost of high latencies, both for mounting a tape in the drive and for positioning when accessing non-adjacent files. CERN Tape Archive: production status, migration from CASTOR and new features / Cano, Eric (CERN) ; Bahyl, Vladimír (CERN) ; Caffy, Cédric (CERN) ; Cancio, Germán (CERN) ; Davis, Michael (CERN) ; Kotlyar, Viktor (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) ; Leduc, Julien (CERN) ; Lin, Tao (Beijing, Inst. High Energy Phys.) ; Murray, Steven (CERN)
During 2019 and 2020, the CERN tape archive (CTA) will receive new data from LHC experiments and import existing data from CASTOR, which will be phased out for LHC experiments before Run 3.This contribution will present the statuses of CTA as a service and of its integration with EOS and FTS and the data flow chains of LHC experiments. The latest enhancements and additions to the software as well as the development outlook will be presented. With the development of the repack function, a necessary behind-the-scenes feature, CTA can now take over custodial data and handle media migration, compaction and failures. [...]

Trends in computing technologies and markets: The HEPiX TechWatch WG / Sciaba, Andrea (CERN) ; Meinhard, Helge (CERN) ; Cancio, Germán (CERN) ; Gasthuber, Martin (DESY) ; Hollowell, Christopher (Brookhaven Natl. Lab.) ; Michelotto, Michele (INFN, Rome) ; Martelli, Edoardo (CERN) ; Muralidharan, Servesh (CERN) ; Panzer-Steindel, Bernd (CERN) ; Seuster, Rolf (CERN) et al.
Driven by the need to carefully plan and optimise the resources for the next data taking periods of Big Science projects, such as CERN’s Large Hadron Collider and others, sites started a common activity, the HEPiX Technology Watch Working Group, tasked with tracking the evolution of technologies and markets of concern to the data centres. The talk will give an overview of general and semiconductor markets, server markets, CPUs and accelerators, memories, storage and networks; it will highlight important areas of uncertainties and risks..

CERN Tape Archive - from development to production deployment / Davis, Michael C (CERN) ; Bahyl, Vladímir (CERN) ; Cancio, Germán (CERN) ; Cano, Eric (CERN) ; Leduc, Julien (CERN) ; Murray, Steven (CERN)
The first production version of the CERN Tape Archive (CTA) software is planned to be released during 2019. CTA is designed to replace CASTOR as the CERN tape archive solution, to face the scalability and performance challenges arriving with LHC Run–3. [...]

Data Center Environmental Sensor for safeguarding the CERN data archive / Leduc, J (CERN) ; Bahyl, V (CERN) ; Cancio, G (CERN) ; Cano, E (CERN) ; Genoud, Q (Savoie U.) ; Kruse, D F (CERN) ; Murray, S (CERN)
CERN has been archiving data on tapes in its Computer Center for decades and its archive system is now holding more than 135 PB of HEP data in its premises on high density tapes. For the last 20 years, tape areal bit density has been doubling every 30 months, closely following HEP data growth trends. [...]

The IT Storage group at CERN develops the software responsible for archiving to tape the custodial copy of the physics data generated by the LHC experiments. Physics run 3 will start in 2021 and will introduce two major challenges for which the tape archive software must be evolved. [...]

Tape SCSI monitoring and encryption at CERN / Laskaridis, Stefanos (CERN) ; Bahyl, V (CERN) ; Cano, E (CERN) ; Leduc, J (CERN) ; Murray, S (CERN) ; Cancio, G (CERN) ; Kruse, D (CERN)
CERN currently manages the largest data archive in the HEP domain; over 180PB of custodial data is archived across 7 enterprise tape libraries containing more than 25,000 tapes and using over 100 tape drives. Archival storage at this scale requires a leading edge monitoring infrastructure that acquires live and lifelong metrics from the hardware in order to assess and proactively identify potential drive and media level issues. Several scientific fields, including Astrophysics, Astroparticle Physics, Cosmology, Nuclear and Particle Physics, and Research with Photons, are estimating that by the 2020 decade they will require data handling systems with data volumes approaching the Zettabyte distributed amongst as many as 10(18) individually addressable data objects (Zettabyte-Exascale systems). It may be convenient or necessary to deploy such systems using multiple physical sites [...]
