Effects of K excess in microstructure of (Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ superconducting powders / Bellingeri, Emilio (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Bernini, Cristina (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Loria, Federico (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Traverso, Andrea (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Leveratto, Alessandro (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Braccini, Valeria (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Malagoli, Andrea (CNR-SPIN, Naples)
Iron-based superconductors (IBSs) are promising for high-field applications due to their exceptional characteristics, like ultrahigh upper critical field and minimal electromagnetic anisotropy. Creating multifilamentary superconducting wires with elevated transport critical current density is essential for practical use. [...]

Weak acid leaching of MgB$_2$ to purify magnesiothermic boron powder / Capra, Marco (Genoa U.) ; Bovone, Gianmarco (CNR, Italy) ; Loria, Federico (CNR, Italy) ; Bernini, Cristina (CNR, Italy) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Tropeano, Matteo (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Tumino, Andrea (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Grasso, Gianni (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Ferdeghini, Carlo (CNR, Italy) et al.
We have established a new procedure for recovering boron contained in oxidized MgB$_2$ phase. Incorrect conditions of synthesis or conservation, or excess impurities in precursors, can lead to MgO formation with consequent degradation of superconducting properties, thus representing a possible problem in the industrial production of MgB$_2$ conductors following the ex-situ PIT process. Reverse advance internal magnesium diffusion process to produce dense MgB$_{2}$ bulks and high $J$$_{C}$ wires through high pressure heat treatment / Bovone, G. (U. Genoa) ; Capra, M. (U. Genoa) ; Bernini, C. (Genoa U.) ; Loria, F. (U. Genoa) ; Cetner, T. (Warsaw, Inst. Phys.) ; Gajda, D. (Wroclaw, Inst. Low Temp.) ; Morawski, A. (Warsaw, Inst. Phys.) ; Ballarino, A. (CERN) ; Hopkins, S. C. (CERN) ; Tropeano, M. (ASG Supercond., Genova) et al.
Here we report a new versatile technique to manufacture MgB$_{2}$ massive samples, called reverse advance internal magnesium diffusion (r-AIMI). The idea focuses on the goal of obtaining dense bulk or wire samples depending on synthesis conditions. [...]

Characterization of Freeze-Dried Boron Nanopowders and Parameter Optimization in Ex Situ MgB2 Wire Production / Capra, Marco (U. This article reports a study to identify optimal synthesis parameters for a pure boron precursor prepared following a patented process developed at CNR-SPIN laboratories, performed in the framework of a collaboration between CNR-SPIN and CERN. Boron is a precursor that plays a crucial role in the MgB2wire manufacturing, as a consequence, the synthesis parameters of the superconducting phase have been investigated. [...]

Future Circular Collider beam screen: progress on Tl-1223 HTS coating / Leveratto, A (Genoa U.) ; Saba, A (Genoa U. ; Genoa U.) ; Holleis, S (Vienna, Tech. Thallium-1223, a superconductor with high critical temperature (T c ∼ 120 K) and high irreversibility line is a promising alternative to copper layers as a low surface impedance material in particle accelerator components. In the existing design of the Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh), for reasons of cryogenic efficiency and vacuum stability, the beam screen that shields the dipoles from synchrotron radiation has to stay at best in the temperature range between 40 and 60 K, in which copper surface resistance might be too high to prevent beam instabilities due to wakefields. Low-field Instabilities in Nb$_{3}$Sn Multifilamentary Wires : the Possible Role of Unreacted Nb / Devred, A ; Bernini, C ; Celentano, G ; Fabbricatore, P ; Ferdeghini, C ; Greco, M ; Gambardella, U
We report an experimental study aiming to demonstrate the not negligible role of unreacted Nb on the magnetic instabilities in superconducting Nb$_{3}$Sn multifilamentary wires, observable through partial flux jumps at magnetic field values below 0.5 T. The analysed wires were recently developed for use as dipoles required in future high-energy proton accelerators and are based on powder-in-tube technology. [...]

Thermal properties of MgB2 : the effect of disorder on gap amplitudes and relaxation times of $\pi$ and $\sigma$ bands / Putti, M ; Galleani, E ; Pallecchi, I ; Bernini, C ; Manfrinetti, P ; Palenzona, A ; Affronte, M
We present thermal conductivity and specific heat measurements on MgB2 and Mg-AlB2 samples. Thermal properties have been analysed by using a two-gap model in order to estimate the gap amplitudes, D(0)p and D(0)s and the intra-band scattering rates, Gss and Gpp. [...]
