H- source characterization and transfer line studies with realistic EM fields in the ELENA decelerator at CERN / Bojtar, Lajos (CERN) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Dutheil, Yann (CERN)
A local H- /p source is operated at the CERN Extra Low Energy Antiproton (ELENA) decelerator for commissioning the ring and subsequent electrostatic transfer lines toward the experiments. For proper optics characterization, it is important to have a detailed knowledge of the H- beam parameters at the source. [...]

The Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) aimsto accelerate electrons to particle physics relevant energiesusing self-modulated proton bunches as drivers in a singleplasma. AWAKE is now in its Run 2b (2023-2024), wherethe goal is to stabilise wakefields by using a plasma density step. [...]

Beam physics studies for a high charge and high beam quality laser-plasma accelerator / Marini, Samuel (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Minenna, Damien F G (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Massimo, Francesco (LPGP, Orsay) ; Batista, Laury (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Chancé, Antoine (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Chauvin, Nicolas (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Doebert, Steffen (CERN) ; Farmer, John (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) et al.
Electron acceleration by laser-plasma techniques is approaching maturity and is getting ready for the construction of particle accelerators with dedicated applications. We present a general methodology showing how beam physics studies can be used to achieve a specific parameter set in a laser-plasma accelerator. [...]

Automating beam dump failure detection using computer vision / Huhn, Francisco (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN)
The CERN SPS Beam Dump System (SBDS) is responsible for disposing the beam in the SPS in case of any machine malfunctioning or end of cycled operation. This is achieved by the actuation of kicker magnets with predefined pulses, which aim to: i) deviate the beam towards the absorber block (TIDVG); ii) dilute the particle density. Evidently, a malfunction of this system may have negative consequences, such as the absorber block degrading if the beam is not sufficiently diluted, unwanted activation of the surroundings or even damage to the vacuum chamber in case of complete failure.By leveraging a combination of real images from a beam screen device and data from simulations, we train an online monitoring system to identify potential failures of the SBDS from real-time images. Design of the new 18 MeV electron injection line for AWAKE Run2c / Bencini, Vittorio (CERN ; JAI, UK) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
The Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) has demonstrated during its first run (Run1, concluded in 2018) the capability of accelerating electrons up to the energy of 2 GeV using proton driven plasma wakefield acceleration. AWAKE Run 2 has started and during the third phase of the program, Run 2c, which aims to demonstrate stable accelerating gradients of 0.5-1 GV/m and emittance preservation of the electron bunches during acceleration, the layout of the experiment will be modified to accommodate a second plasma cell. Quasi-Alvarez drift-tube linac structures for heavy ion therapy accelerator facilities / Khalvati, Mohammad Reza (CERN ; IPM, Tehran) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Ramberger, Suitbert (CERN)
Next generation heavy ion therapy and research facilities require efficient accelerating structures. Particularly, at low beam energies, right after the standard scheme of the ion source, low-energy beam transfer, and radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ), several options for accelerating structures are available including the classic drift-tube linac (DTL), the interdigital H-mode DTL (IH-DTL), and superconducting quarter-wave resonators. A Carbon Minibeam Irradiation Facility Concept / Mayerhofer, Michael ; Bencini, Vittorio ; Dollinger, Guenther ; Sammer, Matthias
In minibeam therapy, the sparing of deep-seated normal tissue is limited by transverse beam spread caused by small-angle scattering. Contrary to proton minibeams, helium or carbon minibeams experience less deflection, which potentially reduces side effects. [...]
