Performance of the Low Energy Ion Ring at CERN with lead ions in 2022 / Alemany-Fernandez, Reyes (CERN) ; Frassier, Alexandre (CERN) ; Rey, Anthony (CERN) ; Wetton, Chris (CERN) ; Mutin, Christophe (CERN) ; Gamba, Davide (CERN) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Carlier, Felix (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Le Godec, Gilles (CERN) et al.
2022 has been a performance consolidation year for the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN that demonstrated its capability of delivering the target beam parameters required for high luminosity production in the LHC in a reproducible and reliable way. The main steps that have led to the high performance reach of this beam, together with the machine stability improvements deployed, are detailed in this paper..

Advancements in injection efficiency modelling for the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN / Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Bellodi, Giulia (CERN) ; Bozzolan, Michele (CERN) ; Madysa, Nico (CERN) ; Meruga, Phani Deep (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernandez, Reyes (CERN) ; Scrivens, Richard (CERN)
The performance of the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) at CERN is mainly determined by the number of charges extracted from the machine and transferred to the downstream chain of accelerators. While the required target of 9e10 charges has now been surpassed, a series of studies have been undertaken to further push the intensity reach of LEIR. [...]

Conceptual design study for a dedicated low-energy diagnostics line at Linac3 / Bellodi, Giulia (CERN) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Cravero, Jean-Marc (CERN) ; Etxebarria Erdoiza, Jone (CIEMAT - Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas Medioambientales y Tec. (ES)) ; Kuchler, Detlef (CERN) ; Mahner, Edgar (CERN) ; Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Scrivens, Richard (CERN) ; Valerio Lizarraga, Cristhian Alfonso (Universidad Autonoma de Sinaloa (MX))
A low-energy diagnostics upgrade of Linac3 has been studied in the last couple of years to allow a more precise characterization of the beam properties at extraction from the source, currently impeded by a complete lack of measuring devices in the first ~6 m of the accelerator layout. [...]

Linac3, LEIR and PS Performance with Ions in 2021 and Prospects for 2022 / Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Albright, Simon (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Alves, Diogo (CERN) ; Angoletta, Maria Elena (CERN) ; Barrientos, Diego (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bellodi, Giulia (CERN) ; Bertolo, Sebastien (CERN) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) et al.
CERN accelerators underwent a period of long shutdown from the end of 2018 to 2020. During this time frame, significant hardware and software upgrades have been put in place to increase the performance of both proton and ion accelerator chains in the High Luminosity LHC era. [...]

Commissioning of Timepix3 Based Beam Gas Ionisation Profile Monitors for the CERN Proton Synchrotron / Sandberg, Hampus (CERN) ; Bertsche, William (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Gibson, Stephen (JAI, UK) ; Jensen, Steen (CERN) ; Levasseur, Swann (CERN) ; Satou, Kenichirou (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN)
A pair of operational Beam Gas Ionisation (BGI) profile monitors was installed in the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) at the beginning of 2021. These instruments use Timepix3 hybrid pixel detectors to continuously measure the beam profile throughout the cycle in the horizontal and vertical planes. [...]

Measuring the Beam Profile by Counting Ionization Electrons / Sandberg, Hampus (Manchester U. ; CERN) ; Bertsche, William (Manchester U.) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Dehning, Bernd (CERN) ; Gibson, Stephen (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Levasseur, Swann (CERN) ; Satou, Kenichirou (J-PARC ; KEK, Tsukuba ; JAEA, Ibaraki) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN)
The principle of non-destructive beam profile measurement with rest gas ionization electrons has remained largely unchanged since the technique was first proposed in the late 1960's. Ionization electrons (or ions) are transported by an electrostatic field onto an imaging detector, where the spatial distribution of detected electrons is a direct measure of the transverse beam profile. First use of Timepix3 hybrid pixel detectors in ultra-high vacuum for beam profile measurements / Sandberg, H (CERN ; U. Manchester (main)) ; Bertsche, W (U. Manchester (main)) ; Bodart, D (CERN) ; Dehning, B (CERN) ; Gibson, S (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Levasseur, S (CERN ; Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Satou, K (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Schneider, G (CERN) ; Storey, J W (CERN) ; Veness, R (CERN)
A transverse beam gas ionization profile monitor is currently under development for the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) to provide non-destructive continuous measurements during a beam cycle. The implementation is exploring a novel use of the Timepix3 hybrid pixel detector mounted inside the ultra-high vacuum of the accelerator beam pipe to provide direct detection of ionization electrons. Time-Resolved Transverse Beam Profile Measurements with a Rest Gas Ionisation Profile Monitor Based on Hybrid Pixel Detectors / Levasseur, Swann (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Bertsche, William (U. A novel rest gas ionisation profile monitor which aims to provide continuous, bunch-by-bunch and turn-by-turn measurement of the transverse beam profile has recently been in- stalled in the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) as part of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) project. The instrument consists of an electric drift field to transport ionisation electrons produced by beam-gas interaction onto a measurement plane, and a magnetic field to maintain the transverse position of the ionisation electrons.
