Neutron spectrometry measurements with an extended-range Bonner Sphere Spectrometer (BSS), as well as neutron H*(10) measurements using an extended-range rem meter WENDI-2, a conventional rem meter LB 6411 and a tissue-equivalent proportional counter, were performed inside and around the Fixed-Beam Treatment Room at the proton therapy facility of Essen, in Germany. The WENDI-2 stood out as the easiest detector for making accurate neutron H*(10) measurements, since its direct measurements were equivalent to the H*(10) rates obtained with the BSS. [...]

SECONDARY NEUTRON DOSES IN A PROTON THERAPY CENTRE
/ De Saint-Hubert, M (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Saldarriaga Vargas, C (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Van Hoey, O (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; Schoonjans, W (SCK-CEN, Mol) ; De Smet, V (ISIB, Brussels ; Brussels U., IIHE) ; Mathot, G (IBA, Louvain-la-Neuve) ; Stichelbaut, F (IBA, Louvain-la-Neuve) ; Manessi, G (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Dinar, N (CERN) ; Aza, E (CERN) et al.
The formation of secondary high-energy neutrons in proton therapy can be a concern for radiation protection of staff. In this joint intercomparative study (CERN, SCK•CEN and IBA/IRISIB/ULB), secondary neutron doses were assessed with different detectors in several positions in the Proton Therapy Centre, Essen (Germany). A Bonner Sphere Spectrometer for pulsed fields
/ Aza, E (CERN ; Thessaloniki U.) ; Dinar, N (CERN) ; Manessi, G P (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Silari, M (CERN)
The use of conventional Bonner Sphere Spectrometers (BSS) in pulsed neutron fields (PNF) is limited by the fact that proportional counters, usually employed as the thermal neutron detectors, suffer from dead time losses and show severe underestimation of the neutron interaction rate, which leads to strong distortion of the calculated spectrum. In order to avoid these limitations, an innovative BSS, called BSS-LUPIN, has been developed for measuring in PNF. [...]

Instrument intercomparison in the high-energy mixed field at the CERN-EU reference field (CERF) facility
/ Caresana, Marco (Milan Polytechnic) ; Helmecke, Manuela (Helmholtz-Zentrum, Berlin) ; (Kubancak, Jan ; ASCR, Nucl. Phys. Inst., Rez. ; Prague, Tech. U.) ; Manessi, Giacomo (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Ott, Klaus (Helmholtz-Zentrum, Berlin) ; Scherpelz, Robert (PNL, Richland) ; Silari, Marco (CERN)
This paper discusses an intercomparison campaign performed in the mixed radiation field at the CERN-EU (CERF) reference field facility. Various instruments were employed: conventional and extended-range rem counters including a novel instrument called LUPIN, a bubble detector using an active counting system (ABC 1260) and two tissue-equivalent proportional counters (TEPCs). Instrument intercomparison in the pulsed neutron fieldsat the CERN HiRadMat facility
/ Aza, E (CERN) ; Caresana, M (Milan Polytechnic) ; Cassell, C (Wollongong U. ; Milan Polytechnic) ; Charitonidis, N (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne, LPAP) ; Harrouch, E (CERN) ; Manessi, G P (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Pangallo, M (CERN) ; Perrin, D (CERN) ; Samara, E (CERN ; Athens U.) ; Silari, M (CERN)
An intercomparison of the performances of active neutron detectors was carried out in pulsed neutron fi elds in the new HiRadMat facility at CERN. Five detectors were employed: four of them (two ionization chambers and two rem counters) are routinely employed in the CERN radiation monitoring system, while the fi fth is a novel instrument, called LUPIN, speci fi cally conceived for applications in pulsed neutron fi elds. / Ferrari, A (CERN) ; La Torre, F P (CERN ; Bern U., LHEP) ; Manessi, G P (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Pozzi, F (CERN ; Munich, Tech. U.) ; Silari, M (CERN)
The well-known foil activation technique was used to calibrate an ionisation chamber employed for the on-line beam monitoring of a 120 GeV c −1 mixed proton/pion beam at CERN. Two monitoring reactions were employed: the standard 27 Al(p,3pn) 24 Na and the alternative nat Cu(p,x) 24 Na. [...]

In the framework of the EURADOS working group 11, an intercomparison of active neutron survey meters was performed in a pulsed neutron field (PNF). The aim of the exercise was to evaluate the performances of various neutron instruments, including commercially available rem-counters, personal dosemeters and instrument prototypes. [...]
