Weak acid leaching of MgB$_2$ to purify magnesiothermic boron powder
/ Capra, Marco (Genoa U.) ; Bovone, Gianmarco (CNR, Italy) ; Loria, Federico (CNR, Italy) ; Bernini, Cristina (CNR, Italy) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Tropeano, Matteo (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Tumino, Andrea (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Grasso, Gianni (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Ferdeghini, Carlo (CNR, Italy) et al.
We have established a new procedure for recovering boron contained in oxidized MgB$_2$ phase. Incorrect conditions of synthesis or conservation, or excess impurities in precursors, can lead to MgO formation with consequent degradation of superconducting properties, thus representing a possible problem in the industrial production of MgB$_2$ conductors following the ex-situ PIT process. Reverse advance internal magnesium diffusion process to produce dense MgB$_{2}$ bulks and high $J$$_{C}$ wires through high pressure heat treatment
/ Bovone, G. (U. Genoa) ; Capra, M. (U. Genoa) ; Bernini, C. (Genoa U.) ; Loria, F. (U. Genoa) ; Cetner, T. (Warsaw, Inst. Phys.) ; Gajda, D. (Wroclaw, Inst. Low Temp.) ; Morawski, A. (Warsaw, Inst. Phys.) ; Ballarino, A. (CERN) ; Hopkins, S. C. (CERN) ; Tropeano, M. (ASG Supercond., Genova) et al.
Here we report a new versatile technique to manufacture MgB$_{2}$ massive samples, called reverse advance internal magnesium diffusion (r-AIMI). The idea focuses on the goal of obtaining dense bulk or wire samples depending on synthesis conditions. [...]

Characterization of Freeze-Dried Boron Nanopowders and Parameter Optimization in Ex Situ MgB2 Wire Production
/ Capra, Marco (U. Genoa ; CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Bovone, Gianmarco (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Loria, Federico (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Bernini, Cristina (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Tropeano, Matteo (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Tumino, Andrea (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Grasso, Gianni (ASG Supercond., Genova) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Ferdeghini, Carlo (Genoa U.) et al.
This article reports a study to identify optimal synthesis parameters for a pure boron precursor prepared following a patented process developed at CNR-SPIN laboratories, performed in the framework of a collaboration between CNR-SPIN and CERN. Boron is a precursor that plays a crucial role in the MgB2wire manufacturing, as a consequence, the synthesis parameters of the superconducting phase have been investigated. [...]

BEST PATHS (acronym for “BEyond State-of-the-art Technologies for rePowering Ac corridors and multi-Terminal HVDC Systems”) is a collaborative project within the FP7 framework of the European Commission that includes an $MgB_2$ -based power transmission line among its five constituent demonstrators. Led by Nexans and bringing together transmission operators, industry and research organizations, this demonstrator aims at validating the novel $MgB_2$ technology for very high power transfer (gigawatt range). Although just recently discovered as a superconductor, Magnesium Diboride has already demonstrated its clear potential for an effective use in a variety of applications. With its critical temperature of about 40 K, MgBB2 gives the opportunity to operate devices at cryogenic temperatures of the order of 20 K, allowing for the use of alternative, cost effective, and simpler technologies than liquid helium.
