Funkcija
urediOvaj gen povezuje se sa HIV-1, uzročnikom sindroma stečene imunodeficijencije (AIDS), koji sadrži genomsku RNK i proizvodi hromosomski integriranu DNK tokom replikativnog ciklusa. Aktivacija ekspresije HIV-1 gena pomoću transaktivatora Tata ovisi od regulatornog elementa RNK (TAR) koji se nalazi nizvodno od mesta inicijacije transkripcije. Ovaj element formira stabilnu strukturu matične petlje i može biti vezan ili za protein koji kodira ovaj gen ili za RNK-polimerazu II. Ovaj protein može djelovati na odvajanje RNK-polimeraze II od TAR-a tokom transkripcionog elongacije. Alternativno prerađene varijante transkripta ovog gena mogu postojati, ali priroda njihove pune dužine nije utvrđena.[6]
