Originally founded in Berlin-Dahlem in 1962 as "Berlin Verlag Arno Spitz", Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag has always been closely associated with the city of Berlin. After returning there when the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, Arno Spitz set himself the goal of founding a publishing house that would contribute to overcoming the social and political confrontation between East and West. In the years that followed, the publishing house specialized in the fields of international law and political science, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe and topics related to Berlin.

Today, Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag’s publishing is focused on the social sciences and humanities. As a specialist scholarly publisher with a 60-year history, the company runs an interdisciplinary program in the fields of law, politics and economics, history and public administration.

Equally firmly anchored in the programme are journals and book series on linguistics and Romance studies, as well as musicology and art history. In addition to general philosophy, legal and social philosophy has developed into an important specialism, while in the geosciences Franz Steiner publishes mainly human geography titles. Founded in 1853, S. Hirzel Verlag has, since the very beginning, been closely associated with the publication of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s German dictionary. At the end of the 1960s, the publishing house was acquired by the Mediengruppe Deutscher Apotheker Verlag. The collaboration with the Grimm brothers continues to shape the publisher’s German studies range, which focuses on medieval studies and includes the Middle High German dictionary, the “Lexer”, and “Minnesangs Frühling”, as well as the publisher’s only journal, the “Zeitschrift für deutsches Altertum und Literatur”, the oldest journal for Altgermanistik still in existence.

Over time, the range of specialist books has expanded to include the natural sciences, in particular the fields of chemistry, physics and environmental science.

S. Hirzel is also synonymous with challenging, high-quality books in the fields of social debate, philosophy, the natural sciences, ecology, nutrition and health. New publications focus on topics that are becoming increasingly important and attracting much interest. In addition to continuing the tradition of publishing scientific and philosophical books, S. Hirzel seeks to promote serious and incisive discourse on contentious issues and is in the very best sense a pioneering publisher.
