Originally from TFL club Sandy Bay Shayne Stevenson was drafted by Fitzroy and made his AFL debut in 1991. He spent three seasons with the Lions, playing 11 games, all of which were losses.
Pacy, and capable of kicking the ball long distances, Stevenson played most of his football as a defender, but adapted well to other roles when required.
The 1994 season found him at Hawthorn where he would experience both his first win and his first finals match. He was very much a fringe player, however, and in four seasons with the Hawks only played 34 games and scored 30 goals.
In 1998 he returned home to Tasmania and joined fledgling TFL club Southern Districts Cats who would disband after just 27 matches. Late in the 1999 season therefore Stevenson commenced with Glenorchy with whom he would crown his career with success in that season’s grand final against Northern Bombers.
