A useful key position defender who could also play serviceably as a forward or in the ruck, Jonathon Robran might have achieved more had he not suffered serious shoulder problems midway through his career.
Robran progressed through the grades at Norwood before making his senior SANFL debut in 1992, the year which saw him taken by Hawthorn in the National Draft. Robran chose to remain in Adelaide though, and did not make the switch until 1995. He initially found the going tough and was not helped by the shoulder issues previously alluded to which reared their ugly head during his second season. Between 1997 and 1999, however, he played consistently well as a key position defender who was particularly strong overhead. Somewhat surprisingly Hawthorn then chose to off-load him to Essendon where he struggled to make an impression.
After two years with the Bombers Jonathon Robran returned home to Norwood where he played out the last couple of seasons of his career highlighted by winning a state guernsey in 2003 for a clash with Western Australia in Perth.
