Collingwood recruited Bill Jones from Darley and he played serviceably for the 'Pies in 60 VFL games, kicking 58 goals, between 1954 and 1958. In the 1955 Grand Final, which Collingwood lost to Melbourne, Jones played on a half forward flank, while in the following year's premiership play-off he was among his side's best players as first rover, but could not prevent the Demons from winning again.

Midway through the 1959 season he crossed to Oakleigh in the VFA where he would round off his career in style, playing 110 senior games in five and a half seasons. A premiership player when the Purple and Golds trounced Sandringham by 10 goals in the 1960 Grand Final, Jones went on to win club best and fairest awards in 1963 and 1964 as well as a Liston Trophy in the latter year. He was club captain in 1963, captain-coach in 1964, and non-playing coach in 1965. His all-round contribution to the club was such that he would be a near certainty for inclusion in any official Oakleigh 'Team of the Twentieth Century'.
