Ross Oakley was a supremely talented wingman who boasted considerable pace and could concoct telling drop kicks and stab passes whilst running full pelt. However, his highly promising VFL career was ultimately short-circuited by knee problems, which also caused him to miss the grand finals of both 1965 and 1966, the latter of which produced the Saints’ first and only league premiership win. When Oakley was forced to retire prior to the start of the 1967 season he was aged just 24 and had played 62 games in five years, kicking 38 goals. In the early ‘80s and ‘90s he served as Chairman and CEO of the V/AFL.
