Although he was of small (173cm, 71kg) build Paul Sarah loved to fly for marks, and did so with no small amount of success. Typically deployed as a rover changing in the forward pocket he garnered plenty of possessions and was a fine snapshot for goal. While at his first club Geelong he teamed well with full forward Larry Donohue. His Cats career saw him play 128 VFL games and kick 204 goals between 1972 and 1980. He was the club’s top goal kicker with 32 goals in 1974 and won the reserves best and fairest award in 1975.
Sarah crossed to Richmond part way through the 1980 season and gave the Tigers solid service in 37 games during which he kicked 51 goals. He left Richmond at the end of the 1983 season but continued playing with various clubs in the Geelong area for another half a dozen seasons.
