Michael Murphy was a strong key position player, whether in defence or up forward, who joined Glenelg from Renmark and made his senior league debut in 1983. He went on to play 134 games and kick 105 goals for the Bays from 1983 to 1987 and from 1990 to 1992. He played in defence in Glenelg’s grand final win over North Adelaide in 1985, and was also a member of losing grand final sides in 1987 and 1990. In addition, he played in the Bays’ 1992 night premiership-winning team.
Murphy spent the 1988 season with North Melbourne, but only managed three VFL games and no goals for the year. In 1991 Adelaide offered him a second chance at the game’s top level, but a mixture of injuries and suspensions brought about by ill discipline again limited his appearances. In two seasons with the Crows he played 16 games and booted 41 goals, six of them in one match against Footscray.
After being cut from the Crows list Michael Murphy was picked up by Brisbane where he played 10 games and registered 22 goals in 1993. His most noteworthy achievement was scoring eight goals in a slashing 162 point win over Sydney at the Gabba.
