A capable and highly versatile all round footballer who could play as a ruckman, in the centre, in defence or up forward, Matt Outen was a stand-out performer in the VFA for Williamstown from 1906 to 1909 and in 1914, during which time he played 67 games and scored 11 goals. In the 1907 grand final against West Melbourne he led the rucks, and was a significant contributor to a three goal win. He spent the 1910 and 1911 seasons playing 27 VFL games and kicking seven goals for St Kilda.
