Fitzroy recruited Leon Harris from Mortlake and after initially using him on a wing and occasionally in a back pocket they deployed him to optimal effect as a rover. Energetic and never less than a hundred percent committed he played 186 VFL games and kicked 101 goals for the Lions between 1979 and 1989. The longer his career went on the more effective he seemed to become. He was runner-up in the club best and fairest voting in 1987 and represented Victoria at the 1988 Bicentennial carnival in Adelaide. His last game in a Fitzroy jumper was the 1989 VFL reserves grand final, which the Lions won. After departing the VFL Harris was appointed captain-coach of VFA club Werribee in 1990. He remained at the helm for three seasons and oversaw the Tigers' triumph in the Victorian Premiers Cup in 1992 as well as laying the foundations for the club's breakthrough VFA flag in 1993.
