After playing as a forward and half forward early in his time at Geelong Len Martin was converted into a highly dependable defender. He passed the ball well both with hand and foot, and was strong overhead. His team skills were also well developed. He had played briefly at Richmond in the VFA before arriving at Geelong, for whom he made 61 VFL appearances and scored 24 goals in 1906 and from 1910 to 1913.
