After playing initially with Sandgate in the QAFL Dean McRae was recruited by North Melbourne and made his senior AFL debut in 1987. Equally at home on a wing or a half back flank he was assured, unflappable and a consistent possession gatherer. He played 81 games and kicked 25 goals for North before being traded to Sydney after the 1992 season. McRae’s first few campaigns with the Swans were among his most productive, but after he lost his place in the side late in a 1996 season which ultimately brought grand final qualification he opted to retire. The Sydney phase of his career saw him play 60 AFL games and kick 30 goals.
