Despite not being the most ostentatiously talented or speedy of footballers there could be no doubting David Mensch’s courage and determination. Capable overhead and a good kick, he registered 173 goals in his 158 game AFL career between 1992 and 2002. He suffered the misfortune of playing in losing grand finals in 1994 against West Coast and 1995 against Carlton. His tendency to under-perform when it mattered most, such as in finals, earned him a fair amount of criticism, but there could be no doubting his bravery or commitment as he proved by playing for two weeks of the 2000 season with a broken jaw.
