South Melbourne recruited David McLeish from Wodonga and, initially playing mainly as a wingman, he impressed from the outset with his all round skill, pace and toughness. Later in his career he played a lot of fine games on a half back flank. His Swans career comprised 213 VFL games and saw him kick 22 goals between 1969 and 1980. He also represented Victoria against Western Australia in 1976. After leaving the VFL he went back to his original club Wodonga.
