Col Williamson commenced his senior playing career with Northcote in the VFA and was a member of the club’s 1934 and 1936 premiership teams. The 1937 season found him at St Kilda where his strength, aerial prowess, exemplary kicking and versatility made him one of the foremost footballers at the club. Often used as a ruckman resting in a back pocket he also proved effective when tried in key positions. His ten season VFL career saw him play 165 games and kick 44 goals.

After leaving the Saints at the end of the 1946 season Williamson was installed as captain-coach of Brighton and oversaw a premiership, his third as a player in the VFA, in 1948. He spent the 1952 and 1953 seasons as non-playing coach of St Kilda but it was a distinctly unmemorable stint as the Saints finished tenth in the former year and twelfth and last in the latter.
