Bob Mathews joined North Melbourne from Melrose and made his senior league debut in 1930. A forward at the outset of his career, he topped his club’s goal kicking list in his debut season with 29 goals. In subsequent years, however, he was successfully converted into a defender. His career with North comprised 58 VFL games and 32 goals from 1930 to 1934. He crossed to Essendon in 1935 but only played twice for the club before retiring.
