Exhilaratingly pacy, ultra courageous, and chock-full of trademark 'eat 'em alive' bellicosity that belied his diminutive stature, Billy Brown was a tremendous favourite among Richmond supporters throughout his nine season, 130-game VFL career, which commenced in 1963. Recruited from VAFA side State Savings Bank, he made his league debut as a wingman, but it was as a rover that he made his name. Playing as second rover to Kevin Bartlett, he was one of the best players afield in the classic 1967 grand final against Geelong, which the Tigers won by nine points. Brown also roved in the 1969 premiership team.

After leaving Richmond Brown played 26 VFA games and kicked 61 goals for Dandenong, 54 of them in the 1972 season. He then played with North Shore between 1976 and 1978 as well as in 1982, coaching the side to a flag in his last year.
