Originally from Coleraine, Barry McKenzie was something of a fringe player at Fitzroy between 1968 and 1972, during which time he played 38 VFL games and kicked 15 goals. After crossing to West Torrens in 1973 he hit the ground running, winning a club best and fairest award in his first season, and going on to play interstate football for South Australia. In 1974 he was a key factor in the Eagles making a rare, albeit fleeting, finals appearance.
