Extremely solidly built at 180 cm and 93 kg, South Melbourne follower and forward Alex Mitchell was a formidable on-field presence. Described as brilliant overhead, as well as extremely courageous and determined, his kicking was substandard to begin with, but under the astute coaching of Roy Cazaly it improved considerably. Originally from Rosedale, Mitchell played 58 VFL games and kicked 34 goals for the southerners between 1936 and 1940 and in 1943. Away from football he was a useful wrestler.
