Collingwood recruited Alec Mutch from Collingwood District in 1911 and he developed into a fine defender, playing for the most part as a permanent back pocket. Excellent overhead, blessed with plenty of pace and agility, and a superb kick, he seemed to get better over time. His 144 VFL games between 1911 and 1921 included the victorious challenge finals of 1917 against Fitzroy and 1919 against Richmond.
