Alec Farrow was a highly accomplished centreman whose career at the top was truncated because of his prior involvement in the first world war. When he made his VFL debut for Melbourne late in the 1919 season he was already 24 years of age, but he quickly made up for lost time by stamping himself as a top quality performer. His Melbourne career comprised 33 games in which he scored 10 goals over three seasons. He was also chosen to represent Victoria twice. A sure ball handler, his ability to read the play was second to none.

In 1922 he crossed to Carlton, where he added a final 14 VFL appearances and 14 goals. It is probable that his career with the Blues would have lasted longer but he was the victim of a horrific collision with a Richmond opponent in round three 1923 which left him with severe concussion, forcing his retirement.
