A defender from Leopold, Alan Pentland played 53 VFL games without kicking a goal for South Melbourne between 1909 and 1912. At the end of his first season he lined up in a back pocket, and was one of the best players afield, in South’s 4.14 to 4.12 grand final defeat of Carlton. Both during and after his football career he played cricket for South Melbourne Cricket Club.
