Holst’s Second Suite is among the most beloved of the classic
wind band repertory and if it weren’t for the folk tunes
they were based on, they may as well be music for a British
royal. Other material presented on this program creates
distinct moods, from the hustle and bustle of Lisa DeSpain’s
“Bicycle Shop” to the calm playfulness of Samuel
Coleridge Taylor’s “Children’s Intermezzo.”

Everyone is welcome to audition! The Concert Band Program is
proud to include students from over 30 majors on campus.
Concert Band auditions occur the first Mondays and
Wednesdays of each quarter. Sign-ups for audition
times become available approximately a month prior to each
quarter’s auditions.
Previous members need not audition.
Percussionists should email Pete Nowlen to set up a special
appointment time (in a space that has percussion instruments).
UC Davis Concert Band—offered all three
quarters—is directed by Pete Nowlen, and is a
wind-symphony sized group of about 55 musicians, for which an
audition is required.
University Campus Band—offered only in Winter
and Spring quarters—and is open to all students and community
members without an audition. Independent study credit is
sometimes available.

The UC Davis Concert Band Program has existed on the campus for
more than 50 years, performing in commencements, ceremonies, and
its own concerts.
The UC Davis Concert Band is an auditioned wind-symphony sized
group of about 55 musicians and plays during the
Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters. Both groups are
open to all students, professors, alumni, and community members.
The Concert Band Program is proud to include students from over
30 majors and minors on campus.
Music director Pete Nowlen has been a member of the UC Davis
faculty since 1988. Nowlen has been a dynamic part of the
northern California musical scene for nearly
thirty years. He is dedicated to renewing and
sustaining classical music’s relevance in our society, and
his career has led him to surprisingly diverse
opportunities.
