Beam physics studies for a high charge and high beam quality laser-plasma accelerator / Marini, Samuel (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Minenna, Damien F G (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Massimo, Francesco (LPGP, Orsay) ; Batista, Laury (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Bencini, Vittorio (CERN) ; Chancé, Antoine (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Chauvin, Nicolas (IRFU, Saclay, DACM) ; Doebert, Steffen (CERN) ; Farmer, John (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) et al.
Electron acceleration by laser-plasma techniques is approaching maturity and is getting ready for the construction of particle accelerators with dedicated applications. We present a general methodology showing how beam physics studies can be used to achieve a specific parameter set in a laser-plasma accelerator. [...]

EARLI: design of a laser wakefield accelerator for AWAKE / Minenna, D F G (IRFU, Saclay) ; Ballage, C (LPGP, Orsay) ; Bencini, V (CERN) ; Bethuys, S (Thales Alenia Space France, Cannes La Bocca) ; Cros, B (LPGP, Orsay) ; Dickson, L (LPGP, Orsay) ; Doebert, S (CERN) ; Farmer, J (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Gschwendtner, E (CERN) ; Jeandet, A (Thales Alenia Space France, Cannes La Bocca) et al.
Following the successful Run 1 experiment, AWAKE has developed a program for Run2 that requires designing and implementing a compact electron source (150 MeV, >= 100 pC) for external injection. The baseline design uses a S- and X-band RF photo-injector gun system. [...]

Preliminary Simulation of CERN’s Linac4 H⁻ Source Beam Formation / Vnuchenko, Anna (CERN) ; Fantz, Ursel (Garching, Max Planck Inst.) ; Lettry, Jacques (CERN) ; Minea, Tiberiu (LPGP, Orsay) ; Mochalskyy, Serhiy (Garching, Max Planck Inst.) ; Revel, Adrien (LPGP, Orsay) ; Wünderlich, Dirk (Garching, Max Planck Inst.)
Linac4 is the new (H⁻) linear injector of CERN’s accelerator complex. This contribution describes the modelling activities required to get insight into H⁻ beam formation processes and their impact on beam properties. [...]

Chapter 4: High-gradient plasma and laser accelerators / Assmann, R (DESY ; LNF, Dafne Light) ; Gschwendtner, E (CERN) ; Cassou, K (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Corde, S (Ec. Polytech., Palaiseau (main)) ; Corner, L (Nikhef, Amsterdam) ; Cros, B (LPGP, Orsay) ; Ferrario, M (LNF, Dafne Light) ; Hooker, S (JAI, UK) ; Ischebeck, R (PSI, Villigen) ; Latina, A (CERN) et al.
Novel high-gradient accelerators have demonstrated acceleration of electrons and positrons with electric field strengths of 1 to > 100 GeV/m. This is about 10 to 1000 times higher than achieved in RF-based accelerators, and as such they have the potential to overcome the limitations associated with RF cavities. [...]

Investigation of ionization-induced electron injection in a wakefield driven by laser inside a gas cell. / Audet, T. L. (LPGP, Orsay) ; Hansson, M. (Lund U.) ; Lee, P. (LPGP, Orsay) ; Desforges, F. G. (LPGP, Orsay) ; Maynard, G. (LPGP, Orsay) ; Dobosz Dufrenoy, S. (Saclay) ; Lehe, R. (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Vay, J.-L. (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Aurand, B. (Lund U.) ; Persson, A. (Lund U.) et al.
Ionization-induced electron injection was investigated experimentally by focusing a driving laser pulse with a maximum normalized potential of 1.2 at different positions along the plasma density profile inside a gas cell, filled with a gas mixture composed of 99%H2 þ 1%N2. Changing the laser focus position relative to the gas cell entrance controls the accelerated electron bunch properties, such as the spectrum width, maximum energy, and accelerated charge. [...]
