Apparent violation of unitarity in elastic pi /sup -/p scattering / Roy, S M (Tata Inst of Fundamental Res, Bombay, India)
The author deduces that if f(cos theta ) has nonnegative partial waves, then (f(cos theta )/f(1))/sup 2/<or=/sup 1///sub 3/+/sup 2 ///sub 3/f(/sup 1///sub 2/(3 cos/sup 2/ theta -1))/f(1) for -1<or=cos theta <or=1. Applying this, it is shown that recent determinations of the pi /sup -/p slope parameter for mod t mod <or=0.04 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ at 100 GeV/c at CERN, together with those at larger mod t mod at Fermilab, imply a substantial violation of unitarity, though each determination by itself is consistent with unitarity. The sign of the polarisation in backward pi /sup -/p to K/sup 0/ Lambda /sup 0/ high energy scattering predicted in a parameter-free Regge model with exchange degenerate Sigma /sub alpha /- Sigma /sub gamma / and Sigma /sub delta /- Sigma /sub beta / poles. The sign prediction depends on (i) the sign of the Regge phase difference between Sigma /sub alpha / Sigma /sub gamma / and Sigma /sub beta / Sigma /sub delta /, which is 90 degrees , (ii) the (SU (3)) sign of the Y* resonance couplings determined experimentally in the crossed channel KN to pi Lambda , (iii) the simple connection between the sign of the non-flip/flip ratio and the parity of the exchanged baryon. The onshell moments of the angular distribution and the cross sections for K/sup +/ pi /sup -/ to K/sup +/ pi /sup -/, K/sup +/ pi /sup -/ to K/sup 0/ pi /sup 0/ and K/sup 0/ pi /sup +/ to K/sup 0/ pi /sup +/ are obtained by extrapolation to the pion pole.
